    Pros

Excellent benefits! Managers were very flexible and understanding with the life and work balance. If asked to work on a critical project the expectations were set upfront and were managed effectively. I really enjoyed working here and had no issues with management.

    Cons

Travel may be more than agreeded upon depending on the customer. That being said the managers were flexibile in working with you on that.

    Advice to Management

Continue to strive in looking for the next big thing that will help solidify the future of your company. The balance between old outdated modes of work and impoving to meet new demands is one that you've managed well.

I worked at Fairfax Imaging full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great co-workers. Great environment. Employees allowed to speak freely to all levels of management. Politics don't exist. If you are a go-getter, this is the place for you. This is an industry that is a niche so you may find it very interesting and challenging.

    Cons

Travel can be burdensome for individuals with small children.

    Advice to Management

Keep growing! Keep the continuous improvement going!

I worked at Fairfax Imaging full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Employees are not micro-managed. Employees are invited to share ideas, and share thoughts. People are friendly, and willing to help. Management will help on tasks if asked, and will assist employees in daily activities. Employees can speak freely to managers and peers.

    Cons

Training is not the best, so if you need hands on training for everything, this isn't the company for you. If you are eager to learn, you can, but nobody is going to hold your hand.

Travel can be tough on a young family.

    Advice to Management

Improve the documentation of your standard operating procedures so all employees are held to the same set of standards.

    Pros

Salary is good. Flexibility of your time is good. Not much micromanaging. Nice co-workers.

    Cons

Benefits are terrible. Depending on your job, you put in looooong. hours. Managers are arrogant and condescending and overpaid.

    Advice to Management

Show up once in awhile. Dress a bit better so you at least look professional even though you're not. You better keep the salaries high or people are going to leave. Get a better, bigger work environment.

I worked at Fairfax Imaging full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

No micro managing, flexible schedules, great coworkers.

    Cons

Management is incompetent, and they seem to think it is acceptable to scream and swear at employees in the middle of a very small office for everyone to hear. Even if you are not the target of their anger, it is quite disheartening to hear your co-workers and friends being treated this way. Inappropriate, unprofessional, and sometimes quite vulgar conversations take place regularly, and due to the size of the office, they cannot be avoided.

The company refuses to spend any money on the tools needed to do the job. Meaning engineers are left to work with an assortment of free tools that do not integrate well, resulting in much time wasted tracking work, copy/pasting, manually merging changes, searching emails, updating spreadsheets, logging on/off in various places, and digging through folders looking for documentation that all too often just doesn't exist.

Existing product is not well documented at all, change requests are not well defined, and questions are often ignored, forcing engineers to guess at what is required. Management is slow to answer questions and clarify requirements, but they are quick to throw others under the bus when things aren't done right and done on time. The company does not, as of my time there, have any business analysts, meaning nobody is looking at the big picture and thinking things through from beginning to end. This leads to a lot of rework, and more wasted time, when it is revealed down the road that what was requested won't work.

    Advice to Management

Look inside your company for the reason you can't retain employees. Experienced professionals will not tolerate such an unpleasant office environment, they will simply look elsewhere for a better opportunity.

Improve the work environment by holding management and employees to a higher standard of professional office behavior. Insist that management treat everyone with respect, or hire better management.

Invest in the productivity of your employees. Proper issue tracking, project scheduling, and development tools will go a long way in improving communication between employees and increasing overall productivity. In my 16 years as a developer, I have never worked in such a disorganized company, experienced such frustration trying to accomplish what should have been relatively simple tasks, or witnessed such incompetence.

    Pros

The benefits weren't bad, there was some schedule flexibility.

    Cons

    Management is abusive,
You're expected to work late nights and weekends (with or without a deadline)
The software is a mess, with no development methodology,
The culture is so dysfunctional co-workers will throw you under the bus to save their own skin

    Advice to Management

Any advice is useless, because senior management almost never shows up!!!

    Pros

Flexible work environment allows you to work from home at times and work alternative schedules as long as you get your work done. Management does not micromanage at all.

If you are a self-starter, this is the place for you. If you are someone who needs daily micromangement and hand holding, this is not the place for you.

    Cons

Travel can be cumbersome for some employees. Depending on the project you are assigned to, you can be daunting. Sometimes the travel is fun, depending on the location.

    Advice to Management

Continue to attract self-starters, and continue to encourage out of the box thinking of your management team.
