I worked at Fairfax Media (More than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic company to work for with the best print and digital offerings in market. Great culture with a strong focus on staff and their development. Can't recommend Fairfax enough.

    Cons

Hot desking can sometimes be painful especially when there are no desks available. Hot tip: Have a colleague save you a desk if you're out of the office.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work and make sure that you continue to acknowledge the hard work of your team members.

I have been working at Fairfax Media full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Programmatic side of the business is growing rapidly. Great relationships with clients and agencies. A strong, young team of sales professionals eager to make their mark.

    Cons

A lot of reliance on print revenue, haven't adapted to the changing digital market anywhere near as fast as other players. At times can be quite silo'd.

    Advice to Management

Invest in growing parts of the business. Complete a thorough digital transformation to make sure the business stays relevant and more importantly - in business.

I have been working at Fairfax Media full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Well-known brand. Big company. Nice building shared with Google.

    Cons

The processes are complex and confusing to use for a new person. There is a lot of hierarchy and things are going out of hand without anyone looking at fixing them. There is not growth, everyone is there to do their job. It feels like a sinking ship with revenues down and lots of cost-cutting. People leave all the time and their roles are not being replaced with the adequate skills required. Due to the fast-pace nature of the business, there is absolutely no time for training on new systems and processes which are unique to Fairfax. People are cold, unfriendly and seem to resent being there. There is no noise or chatter and budget to make employees feel they are valued. Events are limited despite being a big company. We always feel constrained by the low budget and the company is definitely going down. There is a lack of direction and employees feel unvalued.

DON'T work here if you want a happy environment, the company is lacking direction and is 100% reliant on Domain to carry them to prosperity.

It is a terrible place that does not nurture their employees and so everyone is leaving.

    Advice to Management

Change management altogether. Need to inspire employees to be the best they can be.

I have been working at Fairfax Media full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Top level provides good communication, really good support and training when you ask for it. Decent pay and awards. Top management is accessible.

    Cons

Company seems not to know where they are heading. Mixed messages and with job cuts, it feels like the work load is relentless in the drive to get clicks, and good work goes unrecognised as a result . Middle management often poorly chosen and delivers poor leadership. There seems a major disconnect as staff and the top brass because of that. Desperation to be a digital contender but still to maintain its print presence in regional Australia is making goals hard to track and meet.

    Advice to Management

Figure out your future direction and communicate that plan to staff, rather than cloaking it all in secrecy.
