I have been working at Fairmont Hotels & Resorts full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They really care about employees and have good benefits. The travel benefits are great. Lots of room for advancement if you are willing to relocate.

    Cons

There aren't a lot of hotels so if you want to advance with the company you have to move out of area.

I worked at Fairmont Hotels & Resorts (Less than a year)

    Pros

-They had great benefits, that's about it

    Cons

-Not enough communication between managers and staff
    -unrealistic expectations
    -under staffed
-chefs not knowing what's going on in their own kitchen
    -no work/life balance

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the reality of the situation. Communicate clearly to staff and be realistic of your expectations, especially when understaffed with a menu designed for a larger staff.

Great company culture, felt like they were invested in their employees, good discounts and benefits, plenty of CSR initiatives and other activities to get involved with, for the most part enjoyed working with the guests and health club members

    Cons

Long and early hours, but these are the nature of the position.

I have been working at Fairmont Hotels & Resorts full-time

    Pros

Depending on the department you work in you can make really great money. With a proven track record negotiating high pay is definitely a possibility. Also, the union protection and benefits are really nice.

    Cons

Upon my first interview I asked how difficult the transition between departments and hotel locations is and was told that if the position was available, you gave your manager proper notice of your desire to change departments and were indeed qualified for the position all you would need to do is fill out a request for transfer and then wait for HR to contact you. Wht they don't tell you is very rarely does your resume make it to your desired hotel locations HR. You actually have to contact either yourself, your current manager and/or your department manager. They don't even send you a rejection email! I've also seen higher seniority colleagues manipulate/ and abuse their seniority status get beat others out of positions they had app;lied for way before the colleague abusing the way things are done. I've also seen colleagues get totally SCREWED out of potential promotions just because of their lack of being able to staff.

    Advice to Management

Be more organized and learn to effectively communicate with their staff.

I worked at Fairmont Hotels & Resorts part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Busy spa so there is work year round depending on staffing levels. Nice clientele. Good pay for industry overall.

    Cons

Fairmont Hotels and their Spa Management have become too regimented in managing their Spa environments. They have implemented protocols that tell massage therapists what strokes to use, how to start and finish. A massage should be based on the needs of the client as communicated to the therapist. Massage therapists need the autonomy to deliver a treatment based on the client's needs vs. corporate brand regimentation.

    Advice to Management

Talk to your Spa providers before implementing bureaucratic procedures that will fail. Involve employees in the decision making and program design to improve success.
