Pros
I've been lifeguarding for five years now, and Fairview has been my favorite place to work. The pool (as part of Behavioral Support Services) is a single guard facility, so it provides for a lot of independance as an employee. Pros: -high level of independence -in charge of the facility (the staff that comes down with the units must listen to you/ follow your rules and commands) -clean facilities -lots of free time (typically three or four hours of real work in an eight hour day) -can do homework/ read/ netflix as long as work is done and units are not in the facility -retirement benefits (offers 403b for a part-time position) -discount options (health clubs, movie tickets, play/ musical tickets, Valley Fair, Minnesota Zoo, health clubs, etc.)
Cons
-information takes longer to get passed along than is needed (information is often relayed to the unit staff about a patient's behavior in the pool AFTER they have already been discharged) -occasional high stress job (due to the pool being for behavioral/ chemical dependency patients) -pool area doesn't get as frequent attention from housekeeping

Pros
Benefits are decent but not as good as competitors. Cheap PTO.
Cons
HR lacks integrity. Witnessed many things get pushed under the rug. Was harassed by boss until no longer felt safe in career. Again, pushed under the rug.

Terrible experience, not an organization for a high performing professional
Jun 29, 2016 - Human Resources Professional in Minneapolis, MNRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Benefits for non-Union employees are better than most companies. Retirement benefits plan is ancient and not effective if not an employee for nearly a decade.
Cons
Terrible. The company touts change and all of the fancy words to attract potential employees, once inside the organization you find out how stagnant, fearful of change, terrible the administration and non-clinical leaders are in their work. HR in particular is the worst cultural experience for an experienced employee. The constant turnover is a red flag I ignored and encourage job seekers considering Fairview or M Health to consider. Seeking employment outside of this organization and exiting as quickly as possible. This is not a place for a bright and shining star, this organization will kill anyone with enthusiasm very quickly.

Pros
pays the bills until you find a place and a boss that you actually WANT to work for
Cons
low standards formal leadership gets drunk with their employees and if you don't join them, you're bullied when you complain about the bullying and poor office etiquette, it gets worse, not better the raises are pathetic health benefits are expensive on the paycheck and out of your pocket real concerns about patient safety doesn't seem to be accounted for no communication from leadership must be in a clique to not have your lunch stolen from the refrigerator suggestions aren't listened to ...the list goes on

Became too hard to remain optimistic in this IT dept
Jun 21, 2014 -RecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Opportunities to work remotely. Flexible scheduling. Convenient location. Really knowledgeable and caring business users. Told by a colleague the child care program is expensive but fantastic. Lots of very experienced IT staff. I met someone who would later become a good friend.
Cons
Reactionary, break/fix culture. Issues are often escalated to mgmt, few people seem to speak to each other directly about them, and management did not discourage this practice. Too many tools/inefficient use of IT incident management and project management tools. Too little accessible documentation on past projects and/or staff roles and responsibilities. Chronic re-orgs on both the business and IT sides of the house that made people worry about job security. People clearly wanted improvements, but the risk taking that drives innovation seemed discouraged because it was too time consuming. 'Interim' employees and contractors were in leadership roles that need long term, stable direction from a permanent, vested employee. Dissatisfied and repeatedly disappointed users, it was hard to earn their trust. Lack of transparency on how IT projects are prioritized, and no way of knowing what's all in the works. Unwritten policy that if an employee gives less than the required notice for their position they are not eligible to work at the company again and written policy the employee only gets partial PTO payout. For most IT roles this is 4 weeks notice. Takes 5+ minutes to navigate the HR phone tree for an HR question. HR benefits enrollment system is cumbersome. Long-standing employee salaries were not competitive with new hire salaries or market standards. Immediate mgmt was usually too busy to respond to concerns and questions, which contributed to the escalation cycle. Six months is too long for a probationary period, particularly depending on when the employee receives their annual review. Realistically this should be 90 days or less.

Blood Bank Experience
Jan 4, 2022 - Medical Laboratory Scientist in Minneapolis, MNRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I work with an amazing team of people. They are intelligent, talented, supportive of me and overall wonderful people to work with.
Cons
Not enough overtime benefits when we are struggling with a lot of staffing issues on off shifts. The staffing issues have led to a lot of burnout. Also lack of fixing software issues due to the company not working with third party vendors has been a challenge for us.
