I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

location was great and other than that nothing in Pros about it

    Cons

long hours and no breaks. Bad working conditions and bad work environment. Management treat their employees bad and verbal abuse you in front of customers, low wages for assistant managers and doing the work of four people. Life at risk because you work by yourself and have to wait on customers, stock and unload truck by yourself. Upper management does not care about employees and are often rude to them when you have a question and treats you like your stupid, Customers are very rude. Upper management lies about raises and gives excuses. Corporate gives you the run around why you don't get paid on time and messes with your paycheck. You earn Paid time off and can not take the time off because management and upper management denies it so they don't have to pay for your time off that you earned . Have a high turnover rate in employees because they break promises and treat them like they are nothing. Stores are a disaster and as health risks including selling expired food and health products. Stores are clutter and dirty.

    Advice to Management

Start treating employees with better respect and keep promises that you made to your employees..Hire more people and give employees breaks . Pay your employees a decent wage especially the assistant managers because we do the same work and more than some of your managers. Corporate needs to change their attitude and change some of their policies and start caring about their workers.

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Most of the time there is a lot of projects to get done therefore you time does go quickly.
The interaction with the customers; a lot of them are regulars.

    Cons

The pay should be more for the ASM position considering that the minimum wage in Michigan has gone up. Clerks that are hired in with no experience and that have none of the responsibilities of an ASM are being hired in at $8.90 an hour (and next year they will make $9.25). As an ASM we hold the key to the store, have the alarm codes, and are responsible for their daily profits, but we only make $1 more than someone who has no history or obligations to the company.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to the people that are in the stores working all the hours, being away from their families and double juggling their lives to run your stores. Pay them accordingly, as well as possibly giving some kind of bonuses to the Assistant sometimes instead of just the store managers. In a lot of instances the store managers are not the ones doing all the work that goes into the operation of the store; it is the ASM.

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you like the smell of a hard days work with no return. High school was fun right?

    Cons

Poor management, promise you the stars only to rip the ground out from under you while you are looking up. Poor work conditions, not only is the labor strenuous to say the least, no real comforts are provided. Super poor coworkers not willing to help, drama very prevalent.

    Advice to Management

Look listen resolve. Leave your office walk around, you ought to know what's going on in the building and with your people. Just wow!

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you want a part time job that won't support your family, this the place for you.

    Cons

Was a manager for 4 years for this company. Gave them my all, had one of the nicest stores I've been in. Traveled to several other stores to do other managers jobs because they were too lazy. Had to work several open to closes a week because the company keeps payroll hours so low and that increases theft and decreases employee safety because only one person is in the store the majority of the day. The distribution center is so shady you don't get the product you're supposed to or it's labeled wrong and broken, making it your fault that counts are off. I gave my two weeks notice and worked 40 hours in 3 days on my last week and they refused to pay me for those hours because it was in 3 days instead of 6. Policy changes after you give notice. They flat will not pay employees. There are so many other issues with this company that I don't want to take the time to list.

    Advice to Management

    Tsk, tsk, tsk

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time

    Pros

They're always hiring, because they're always firing!

    Cons

Management treats everyone as if they are expendable. Terrible pay compared to other similar distribution centers. They say you get incentive pay if you work harder, but have been caught cooking the numbers to avoid paying you for the extra work.

    Advice to Management

Treat people better, pay better, get a clue.

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time

    Pros

It was easy to get a job as an assistant store manager.
No working past 9:30 or so (usually)

    Cons

Pay is low (even ASMs make barely over minimum wage)
Hostile work environment (teasing, lack of accountability)
Poor health standards (significant amount of mold in the fridge which went unnoticed by employees for over 3 months. Food products that had expired two years ago still on the shelf)
