I worked at Family Dollar Stores part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

To be honest the only pro is that they offer above minimum wage sometimes depending where your at.

    Cons

There was no room for growth at my store, unrealistic tasks for those who are dedicated to the job and if you don't finish all the tasks the store Manager will fuss at you even though she can't complete half the tasks herself, and only Christmas you have off because the store is closed. Only get over time if low on staff, so you'll be lucky to get 30 hours a week unless really needed. Low pay, unprofessional management. This place wilol also test your morals based off of "Comanche Policy".

    Advice to Management

I suggest being a lot more dedicated to your employees and actually recognize whice are the hard workers and which are the ones that just are there to do only some work and go home. Also, it's very unfair for other managers to see potential in another crew member and they try to offer a position, but that transfers and other management get in the way of that process just because they are worried that they will lose you and manipulate the situation.

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Most customers are regulars and friendly.

    Cons

Company has unrealistic expectations of store level management in regards to hours and work/life balance. Store managers on Salary are expected to work 52 hours per week, but because payroll allotments for their hourly staff is so low, most managers can expect to work at least 60 hours per week. Assistant managers are given vacation hours but have a difficult time utilizing them. Assistant managers can expect to work evenings and weekends. This company doesn't care about you or your family. Also expect to have your bags checked at the door when you go home. They believe employees are the thieves. But we regularly find packaging from stolen merchandise throughout the store from customers. The company does not respect nor care for hourly employees. Local district managers claim to be accessible but have made it clear they want only to speak with their managers.

    Advice to Management

Respect your employees. If you think they are thieves don't hire them. Remember, that payroll is about making sure your employees can perform at their best. Work/Life Balance is key. You are chewing up your managers and assistants. Increase pay rates to reflect the very physical work that is being done.

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, nice flexibility and work life balance.

    Cons

Constantly changing processes with no communication. Long term strategy is non-existent and everyone is over-worked and spread thin. People are leaving here left and right.

    Advice to Management

Stop focusing on 1 metric at a time and instead focus holistically on the total business. The right decision is not always the quick fix.
