I worked at Family Video part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pros: you get paid a little over minimum wage in Pennsylvania, most managers give good training before you start working on your own, and you get to watch new movies a few days before they are released to the public.

    Cons

The company is slowly failing due to customers getting their movies from other outlets; example, Netflix, Hulu, and Red Box. So they are closing more and more stores and lessening the hours during the day that the store is open for business. A big con was the "Adult" film section of the store. As as female employee, I was very uncomfortable selling product that was extremely degrading to women and minorities. I found it ironic that the company is called "Family Video" when they sell grotesque adult films. There were also multiple times customers said sexually aggressive things to me, and used our store's adult films as reference. I also felt unsafe closing the store during the late hours of the night and having to drop hundreds of dollars off at a local bank. Overall, it made for a very uncomfortable and uneasy work environment.

    Advice to Management

Start renting more movies and shows online, remove the adult films from inventory, and offer a safer work environment.

I worked at Family Video part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people you work with in store are great, and store managers do their best to accommodate schedules of people with two jobs (which you will need if you have bills to pay)

    Cons

Higher up management does not care about it's hourly employees, corporate is no longer motivated by employee satisfaction. Long hours in unsafe working environments. Stores are constantly understaffed because they are unable to keep employees.

    Advice to Management

Remember your employees are necessary for running a successful business.

I worked at Family Video part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Got to have free/discounted games & movies
-Marcos Pizza next door was really cheap
    -Regular customers were great
    -Fun co-workers
    -Watch movies on your shift

    Cons

-No breaks whatsoever. You are on your feet the entire shift
-The number of employees on a shift depends on how many returns/rentals there are, and you will almost never see more than 2 on any given shift. You are almost guaranteed to be alone everyday besides Friday/Saturday night.
-Promotions were based purely on seniority, not quality of work or merit.
-Ridiculous hiring process for somebody selling movies (3 interviews and a timed test)
-You will only ever make minimum wage unless you move up. Then you make just above minimum wage, yay!
    -On call for most shifts
-Always a promotion and commission is based on those promotional sales

    Advice to Management

Treat & train your employees better. When an employee doesn't like their job, the customers can tell. This business model of treating employees like dirt and expecting spectacular output at all times is both unrealistic & is partially why stores like Family Video no longer exist.

    Pros

They give you a chance earn money apart from your income with your sales.

    Cons

Maybe it was just my experience with family video is that they not really care about the needs of an employer. First, having to go through 3 interviews and tests when you're just selling movies is ridiculous. Second, having people be "on call", is not necessarily and it's really frustrating.

    Advice to Management

Act like you care about and employees and give them a set schedule from their starting point.

I worked at Family Video part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The job is fun, and the employees are often fun to work with. Plus, you get free movies, and depending if you are by a Marco's Pizza, you get good deals on that too! Also, it helps you learn how to navigate difficult customer situations, and gain good skills with customer service.

    Cons

Corporate doesn't seem to care about employees happiness or safety. Very frequently, an employee is running a store by themselves for hours on end, with nobody else in the building with them late at night. Many of the employees are young girls, so this is dangerous. They don't have any security measures in place (ie: cameras, locks on all doors, emergency plans). Also, somehow, this company has gotten away with not giving employees breaks or lunches when working long hours. There were plenty of 10 hour shifts I worked that had no breaks or lunches, and I was up on my feet the whole time. Don't know how they legally pulled that off (or why they would want to do that to employees?) Also, customers are often rude and verbally abuse/threaten employees, while the employees are just told to stand there and take it, while being nice to the person. There are no protection plans in place for these situations, and as said before, employees are often working completely alone with no other persons in the building while customers are making threats or abusing employees. Corporate also has unrealistic expectations on what an employee can do. I have had customers throw up in my store, and we were expected to clean it, without any proper cleaning supplies like gloves or even a vacuum of some sort (biological hazard-not in job description!). Also, the job barely even pays minimum wage for all of this, I got paid 7.50 (I got a promotion of 25 cents for all my hard work).

    Advice to Management

Start caring about your employees more! Focus on safety, like adding real security cameras, and coming up with emergency plans and better protocol for dealing with tough customers. Also, I suggest raising the wage for employees who show good work (especially for all that we have to put up with).

    Friendly staff and good discounts?

    Cons

No chairs for sitting.... Not even in a break room! There were NO lunch breaks. No rest time. Zero respect for employment

    Advice to Management

Terrible business strategy. Be good to your employees!

I worked at Family Video part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Get to work with movies and games and costumers are often very fun.

    Cons

    - On Call Shifts. Because of the strict hours that need to be kept in our store we would have on call shifts where you have to be ready to work at any minute for around 4 hours. You would often not get called in so you would not get paid for time you could have dedicated to anything else.
Pornography section- How can a "Family" store have a porn section?
High Turnover rate - A new person would quit or be fired every day it felt like. Even among management.

    Pros

Flexible hours, but because of super-strict rules of 'saving labour,' expect to be 'on call' a LOT. If and when other employees decide to spontaneously quit, or may be really late, you will be called and expected to show up regardless of scheduling availability.

    Cons

Low pay, even with that meager "commission." Managers don't care about your availability, or that you need to leave once you've clocked out on time. They wring you dry of every drop of work you can provide them, and expect way too much to get accomplished because they only have one person on a shift unless it's SUPER busy.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employess availability. Promote people based on skill and reliability, NOT the fact that we just need a warm body to fill a position.

I worked at Family Video full-time

    Pros

This company was pretty well run all those years ago when I started. Things have changed. Pay used to be super low for retail management, but now it's lower. Because of shrinking revenue and new management salary laws, store managers are now paid hourly. It would be fine if the hourly was about the same as what the salary was. It's not. It is about $10,000 less annually. Ridiculous.

    Cons

Everyone is jumping ship, and for good reason. But here is the SCARY part....

     They aren't replacing upper management!!!!!
District managers are simply taking over for others that quit. DM's used to run 3-6 stores. Now they run 10-16!!! (Their pay has been restructured as well, I don't know the specifics but they now make less and run 2x as many store)
They aren't even replacing their regional managers! The RM is running all the stores in Texas, and also all the stores... in MINNESOTA! Yup. Time to bail.

    Advice to Management

Let us know what is going on with this company. Everyone sees these changes but no one is talking about it.
