    Pros

Great People, work well with busy schedule, and discounted/free movie rentals

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Close on holidays, movie rentals are not that important to take people away from their families!!

I have been working at Family Video full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very flexible! It's great if you're in school, have kids or have another job. There is not set schedule so they can pretty much work around your schedule from week to week. Co-workers are like family, as are many of the customers. Management is very helpful and easily reached. At times you can be very creative with side work.

    Cons

Expectations don't match wage. Family Video pays higher than minimum wage, but the tasks I am supposed to trust my staff with are things I never had to do at previous jobs (inventory, monitoring payroll, taking deposits, making vital decisions regarding customer accounts & fees, often working alone doing the work of multiple people.) l, as a general manager, am responsible for what at most places is considered H.R. work. The way recent labor updates is ridiculous. Every half hour you're supposed to check how many people you should have working and send people home if needed (which is an issue for someone who is expecting to work 20 hours a week and only gets to work 11.) The main problem is that it updates based on rentals and returns. It doesn't take into account all the cleaning and closing/opening tasks, other side work, non-rental purchases, etc. Logically if you have enough customers and movies to run for 2 people then you should have a 3rd person there for all the other stuff. Instead you often and up working by yourself and have at least a couple hours where RL says you should have 2 people there.

    Advice to Management

If you're going to continue delegating more work than most places then you need to pay more than most places. Either increase wages or lower the work load.

I have been working at Family Video full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Advancement is plentiful and if your manager does a good job at controlling payroll, you can easily get raises. We get commission, but as the years go on, more and more gets taken away so you have to work extra hard for a good commission check.

    Cons

You're expected to do a lot while working by yourself and there are honestly not enough hours in a shift for that. In upper management, it sometimes feels like they just want you to work off the clock because you can't possibly get everything done that needs done AND have good customer service.

    Advice to Management

Either allow more training or find time to be more hands on with your employees. When people feel appreciated, they do the job better.

I worked at Family Video full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Fun job
    - Great experience
    - Cool customer base

    Cons

    - Below average pay
    - High expectations
    - Not very many hours for people that aren't in management

    Advice to Management

After working for this company (and loving it) for years, I unfortunately could not handle the pay anymore.

Paying your store managers barely above minimum wage is not okay, especially when most management jobs start on average at $15 an hour.
There are far too many expectations to be making less than $13 to practically run a store by yourself.

Beside the pay, I loved working for this company.
You get to interact with a lot of different people, make a lot of connections, and discuss things that we all love.... Movies and video games!
There is a lot of busy work, but if you're like me and can't sit still, then it's never a bad thing.

If I had been able to live off of the pay comfortably, I would have never left.

I have been working at Family Video part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Advanced pay before holidays
    - Manager lets us have surplus/expired food and drinks
    - Commission
    - Get to watch movies (occasionally)
    - Manager is flexible with hours

    Cons

    - Vice president tried backing out on giving employees commission for StayFit 24 (a sister company) sign up until both the gym and FV employees threatened to sue.
    - Cut salaried positions for managers to hourly and make them work overtime without pay.
    - No breaks if not required by state law.
    - Trashy customers
    - Adult Room in a "family" store
    - Cuts corners wherever possible, usually leaving employees on the short end of the stick
    - Changes rules and regulations regularly
    - Not many chances for advancement
    - Staffing entire store by yourself for 6-8+ hours.

    Advice to Management

Stop cutting corners when it comes to your employees. Give them better benefits and in turn, they will sell things better.
