    Cons

No lunch break and people gain management positions based off seniority.

    Advice to Management

Always encourage the employees and do not treat them harshly unless they are absolutely not trying at their job. Always encourage the ones that are doing well.

I have been working at Family Video part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Most managers allow very flexible work schedules.
    - Very fun, energetic, and exciting place to work.
    - Great company for people who love working directly with customers.
    - Many opportunities for managerial (or higher) advancement.

    Cons

    - Wages are not competitive and rarely more than minimum wage.
    - The work can be very demanding and occasionally overwhelming.
    - Depending on your location, it can be difficult to get consistent scheduled work hours.
    - Management can be oppressive or demanding regarding work performance (especially for sales related items).

    Advice to Management

Re-evaluate employee wages; most employees don't get paid what they're worth. Consider being more flexible on work schedules and number of employees clocked-in; most managers seem to try to compete for being the most under-hours, which leads to overwhelming remaining staff with too many tasks.

    Pros

It is a fun environment. Mentoring staff is a huge plus, as is the amount of freedom I'm given to run my stores.

    Cons

District Managers are spread thin, so getting help is tough. There are no breaks, and the shifts are long. We are not allowed to sit down throughout am entire 10 hour shift.

I worked at Family Video full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They gave me a chance as someone with little experience.

    Cons

Lots of red tape. Some department heads like to micromanage. Pay is always an issue. Life/work balance is more work, less play.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your employees more. Pay at or above market. As analytical as they are with finances, they fail to see how much they loose with turnover, hence the "Always Hiring' they do.

    Pros

You don't have to wear a uniform, only clothes that are business casual. There is commission for selling candy, pop, half off cards, and bundle deals.

    Cons

There are no breaks, however you can still leave and get food when you run deposits. There is rarely ever downtime and you'll find yourself rushing to get every task done for the day.

    Advice to Management

    Give employees breaks!

I worked at Family Video part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Can be lots of fun to work at, even if there are a lot of surprise responsibilities.

    Cons

The managers aren't always the best, mostly on the district and regional level.

    Advice to Management

Don't act like your employees are trying to do you wrong. They're working hard because not only are they dealing with customers, but they're also keeping the store clean and most of the time working alone. Give them a break and don't fake being a friend. Just be someone who they can talk to if something goes wrong without fear of getting the cold shoulder.
