I worked at Family Video (More than a year)

    Pros

I enjoyed my time at Family Video and the people that I worked with and for.

    Cons

With any customer service job, dealing with people got to be frustrating at times.

    Advice to Management

Get an actual break room so your employees aren't eating at the counter in front of customers.

I have been working at Family Video full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great co workers/bosses
Easy to move up to management
    Lots of coaching
    Commission on upsells
    Fun environment
Can gain a lot of experience quickly- hiring/training/disciplining staff, throwing grassroots events, cross marketing, profit and loss, day to day business management, and more you're all responsible for.

    Cons

High expectations for one person on shift
    Often work by yourself
    Pay lower than normal
Hard to move past management level
Bonuses are very difficult to achieve since some factors are largely out of managers control
Sometime upper management does not do their job and you can be on your own solving problems

    Advice to Management

Decrease turnover by having on time evaluations, consistent training, and look at giving part timers who work closer to 40 hours higher pay.

I have been working at Family Video part-time

    Pros

Family video is very particular about the people they hire so you can always assure that you will work with a fun energetic staff. There truly is never a boring day at Family Video!

    Cons

Customers can be very rude and demanding much like any other customer service job. Also the regional managers, regional VP, and Regional President don't realize how much they ask the store employees to get complete often leaving management and workers with more work than they have time for.

    Advice to Management

Regial Managers, VPs, and Presidents need to get into the stores more so that way they know how the store actually operates and know how much can actually get done with the amount of customers and the amount of employees they allow on staff at a certain point of time.

I worked at Family Video part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This company is a fun place to work for a part-time job. I worked here during undergrad, and it wasn't bad at all; didn't have to fold clothes or wait tables. I have had far worse part-time jobs, that's for sure

    Cons

Not sure what the future is for this company - it seems rather uncertain. With technology where it is, I don't know how much longer brick-and-mortar rental stores will be able to hang on for.

    Advice to Management

Close on major holidays! There's no need to be open, especially with "family" in your company's name!

    Pros

Free movie rentals. Excellent business training.

    Cons

Too many hours worked. High turnover rate of employees. Everyone stretched too thin.

    Advice to Management

Allow more people to work during the day. Get someone to just do inventory.

I worked at Family Video part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone was very friendly. None of the tasks were difficult, but there was always enough to keep you busy. Free movie rentals always a plus.

    Cons

Lots of nights, weekends, and holidays. Sometimes scheduling was inconsistent.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

    Pros

Movie viewing, growth opportunities, skill development, ownership in daily operations, strategic development for your store, customer relationship management, learning to run a business (all aspects: accounting, human resources, training, development, marketing, operations, etc.)

    Cons

Long hours, limited weekends off, open most hours of the day, 365 days a year. high employee turnover.

    Advice to Management

Incoming managers: Take this job. It will help you develop skills and make you more marketable in the future. If you have a DM who will cultivate those skills and encourage your promotion, you will promote. This culture is unbelievable, they really care about their employees and their customers are fantastic and treated as such (FVMC is the Gold Standard in Customer Service). To FVMC upper management: make sure you are listening to the talent you want to retain. The only reason I left is because I wasn't being challenged enough.
