I worked at Family Video part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you know movies and are willing to have fun conversations about them, you will love this job. Pretty easy job and fairly simple to get sales. You get to take movies home before they come out so that you are ready to talk about them with customers when they inevitably show up for them on Tuesday mornings.

    Cons

Short staffed very often. Sometimes I would have to send someone home when the computer told me to, even when it seemed uncomfortable to work until midnight by myself. Low pay. No set schedule so you never know how many hours you will be getting and the schedule for the next week never came out until the middle of the previous week. Working holidays was never fun.

    Advice to Management

Provide a safer work environment for closers. No one should ever work a close alone. A more consistent schedule would be easier to work with for employees and there would be less scheduling issues and short staffed days.

I worked at Family Video part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Hours were flexible. I had part time on top of my regular full time job, so lots of nights and weekends.

    Cons

Run by people younger than me with less business experience. They would often cheat the system for hours to have more people working to talk.

    Advice to Management

    be more present

    Pros

Very relaxed job, you pretty much just sit around and watch movies, and you get to work with people, if you're into that.

    Cons

The more sales you make, the more hours you get. But even as the stores top seller I get about 10-15 hours a week at just over minimum wage.

    Advice to Management

Don't hire so many people that even your top sellers are only getting 10-15 hours per week

I worked at Family Video full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Wonderful staff and employees, Flexible around other schedules.

    Cons

Worked over 10 years at FV. It used to be the best job in the world- then it changed hands from the father to the son and it became profit over everything. Very poor starting rate, no consistency in raises, overworking upper management, paying store managers $10/hour to get everything done in under 30 hours.

    Advice to Management

At this rate- you obviously only care about other ventures. You may as well close it down,

I have been working at Family Video part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Free rentals if 20% of your transactions have sales.

-You can watch movies on the clock on the TVs.

Cant think of anything else TBH.

    Cons

-No security cameras in or out of the store, and when you’re working alone, it’s terrifying to close can bring deposits of several hundred dollars a day across the street to the bank.

-They will schedule you for less than 10 hours a week, and are unforgiving if you ever need to call off.

-Unrealistic expectations for sales and task completion. When it comes to sales, they push high “sales” ( 1. Rental of the day being rented on weekends, 2. DMRC sales aka customer pays $10 to get half of rentals for a month, 3. Two for $3 candy and soda deal with a transaction of +2 rentals, or 4. rent 3 get 1 free new releases). Towns that still have Family Videos are impoverished 80% of the time (from my experience) and the customers can rarely get more than the free kids rentals we offer and the one movie they planned on. I have to twist arms (figuratively) to get customers to purchase more to get my sales up and I’m still failing in the eyes of corporate. In regards to tasks? There’s a list a mile long of nightly tasks that is impossible to complete without working after the scheduled shift, and corporate will fire you if you stay late ON THE CLOCK. I repeat, they expect you to continue working OFF THE CLOCK.

-Corporate policies change every 3 months.

-corporate is always threatening to fire you for minute mistakes

-High employee and store manager turnover rates.

-Pay does not reflect the work expected.

-No breaks. At all. If it’s busy and you have to pee? Tough luck. Hope you like UTIs and bladder infections. Have to eat? Better hope you remembered to bring a packed lunch and can eat in between rushes.

-Required pages of memorization for pointless information about corporate in order to keep your job. I’m talking, you need to know the names of the CEO and Vice President, the year it was as founding, how many states have stores, what other stores are apart of the brand, etc.

I worked at Family Video full-time

    Pros

Flexible schedule and you get free movies

    Cons

Most employees are only given 10 to 12 hours a week. Pay rate is higher than min wage but don't expect any raises. Commission for sales help compensate that so better be able to sale. Mostly employees work by themselves so no breaks and even going to the bathroom is tricky.

    Advice to Management

Promote workers that do the job you ask. High turn around is not the way to run a business
