I worked at Family Video full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Fun job
    - Great experience
    - Cool customer base

    Cons

    - Below average pay
    - High expectations
    - Not very many hours for people that aren't in management

    Advice to Management

After working for this company (and loving it) for years, I unfortunately could not handle the pay anymore.

Paying your store managers barely above minimum wage is not okay, especially when most management jobs start on average at $15 an hour.
There are far too many expectations to be making less than $13 to practically run a store by yourself.

Beside the pay, I loved working for this company.
You get to interact with a lot of different people, make a lot of connections, and discuss things that we all love.... Movies and video games!
There is a lot of busy work, but if you're like me and can't sit still, then it's never a bad thing.

If I had been able to live off of the pay comfortably, I would have never left.

I worked at Family Video part-time

    Pros

I worked at Family Video during the summers while I was in college and it was pretty cool. My manager was dope and everyone who worked there was around my age. While there are a lot of little things to learn, they do a good job of training you. Money is pretty good for a college kid and you can make commission.

    Cons

Very high turnover for managers. My manager usually switched from one summer to another.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the facial hair policy. My mustache and goatee are always well maintained and should be allowed under the employee dress code. Other than that I enjoyed my time here.

I have been working at Family Video part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Work schedules are typically highly flexible.
    - Workplace is usually fun and energetic.
    - Many opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

    - Pay is not competitive; typically just above minimum wage for most employees.
    - Competition for hours is heavy; most employees are given <15 hours a week.
    - Company is extremely sales driven which often comes off as daunting.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees more and be more positive/rewarding overall.

I have been working at Family Video part-time

    Pros

Movies/actors/directors are a passion of mine, so it's great to work around something I enjoy.
All of the $1 rentals I get for free, and I get to preview movies 5 days before customers can rent them.
During summertime, I get to manage myself basically because only 1 employee is needed during each shift (excluding Fridays and Saturdays).

    Cons

Training is short with a LOT to learn for only having about 8 hours to pick up all you can before you're put on a shift by yourself. You will be calling the assistant manager and other stores asking questions quite a bit during your first month.
There's a lot to know for what's close to a minimum wage job, that's my biggest gripe; For all the knowledge you need to carry to be successful in this position, Family Video should really be paying $10/hr minimum.
Working alone can be a pro (learning to manage yourself and problem solve because you don't have a manager there 90% of the time) but can also be a con because you have no one to talk to.

    Advice to Management

Make a better training checklist instead of just winging it, and have new trainees physically do every task. A lot of people learn better when physically doing the task rather than being told verbally.
    Make training longer.

I worked at Family Video full-time

    Pros

The only pro was making friends with my coworkers and the flexible schedule. Got to rent the movies a week before they were released.

    Cons

Not a safe work environment, you'd often close the store alone at midnight, and I didn't always work in the safest areas. Pay was garbage for the amount of work they expect. $9.25 an hour for an assistant manager is awful. Open 365 days a year is a little excessive. Your "family" business does not allow many employees time with their families. High turnover with managers and employees. Attempting to manage payroll sometimes meant sending someone home when there was still a lot of work to be done, but you would get in trouble if the "projected" number of workers and how many were working was off.

    Advice to Management

Reconsider keeping the stores open on holidays. Don't put so much pressure on conserving payroll, service and quality of care that goes into the store goes down.

I have been working at Family Video part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Advanced pay before holidays
    - Manager lets us have surplus/expired food and drinks
    - Commission
    - Get to watch movies (occasionally)
    - Manager is flexible with hours

    Cons

    - Vice president tried backing out on giving employees commission for StayFit 24 (a sister company) sign up until both the gym and FV employees threatened to sue.
    - Cut salaried positions for managers to hourly and make them work overtime without pay.
    - No breaks if not required by state law.
    - Trashy customers
    - Adult Room in a "family" store
    - Cuts corners wherever possible, usually leaving employees on the short end of the stick
    - Changes rules and regulations regularly
    - Not many chances for advancement
    - Staffing entire store by yourself for 6-8+ hours.

    Advice to Management

Stop cutting corners when it comes to your employees. Give them better benefits and in turn, they will sell things better.

Kickback from up sells is nice

    Cons

    The pay is rather low.
The hours are not so great.

    Advice to Management

Go beyond the qualification of breathing when doing interviews.
