    Pros

All of my coworkers were kind. Having movies on while working also makes the time go by faster.

    Cons

Some of the management was either not present or did a poor job.

I worked at Family Video part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Family Video is a relatively comfortable place to work compared to working in the food industry. People who still use DVD players can get free rentals. If you like organizing things alphabetically, you'll love it.

    Cons

Compensation is based on an arcane idea of sales that was opaque to me until my literal last day. Total sales dollars are not the driving force, but rather the number of deals an employee pedals. Given that the hiring policies are more demanding than a fast food job, but the entry pay is the same, this is a must-miss job.

    Advice to Management

Add flexibility to shifts to compensate employees better, allow for management to work part time without being demoted.

I have been working at Family Video full-time

    Pros

Lots of friendly and returning customers. You build up personal time. Free dollar movies and half price on everything else. If you do well on your sales each period, you can get free new releases as well. Plus, we can view movies before they are released the following Tuesday as long as they are returned before closing the day before. If you like staying busy and are actively searching for things to do, you can definitely make the time go by very quickly. I've met different store managers and they are very friendly and helpful when you need it. If you call them even if they don't manager your store, they will not turn you down for help.

Family Video does encourage you to make your own decisions when it comes to customers, you are empowered to, though within the guidelines. If you did something you aren't supposed to, you don't get in trouble (unless done repeatedly) but are told what should be done instead as a way to educate you.

If you are looking for a part-time job, this is definitely a good and easy place to work.

    Cons

On your feet all the time. If you work full-time, the hours can get a little irritating especially if you have family and would like some semblance of a social life, but the hours are what it is.

As a part-timer, sometimes you are put On-Call and it can be frustrating to know you don't have guaranteed hours. Not only that, if you are put on regular hours and it is slow, you can even be called off if you aren't a keyholder/closer.

I worked at Family Video part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Can make extra money through commission, empowered to make own choices

    Cons

Terrible management all around, all employees are treated unfairly (including managers and district managers), you are always overworked and severely underpaid. As a part time employee you are expected to do work that would be a lot for a manager to do. They will take advantge of you every single day. I was paid under minimum wage for months at Family Video and when I brought it up to management they said they would "look into it". You constantly work alone due to a flawed system that says how many people should be working each half an hour, which allows for the stores to constantly be robbed and stolen from, and you will get blamed. DO NOT WORK HERE. It isn't worth it.

    Advice to Management

    Care for your employees.

I worked at Family Video part-time

    Pros

Could have quickly moved up just by being a hard worker with good work ethic.

    Cons

Business casual dress code, so I had to wear retainers in piercings, hide tattoos, wear a wig to hide dyed hair. Even had to wear hair down at all times to hide slightly stretched earlobes and more than one ear piercing. Men could not have ears pierced or any facial hair. Pretty ridiculous when we are selling porn.
A lot of memorization of sales, prices, schedules, fees, etc.

    Advice to Management

Reconsider the extremely strict dress code for a mostly part-timers media company, especially one that rents and sells pornographic materials. I probably would have done the management training program if it weren't for that.

I worked at Family Video full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    none at all, virtually none

    Cons

You are expected to work above 55 hours each week. they don't care about your family life. They remind me of other retailers that are dying- they are in denial about their inevitable decline

    Advice to Management

    give it up.

I worked at Family Video full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    -Usually work with good people
-Access to new movies prior to official street date
-Regular customers can be a BLAST
    -Concerns always addressed eventually
-I really did learn a great deal about running a business and understanding what motivates certain employees
-I was lucky enough to work under 2 outstanding district managers who did care deeply about my team and I.

    Cons

    -Dying business
-Management passed the district level (but also sometimes the district level) is atrocious
-Old school marketing in a field that depends on technology
    -Ridiculous workload with unreasonable timelines
-Most promotions/raises seem like a seniority based thing. Where as the newer employees working their tails off don't see anything. I lost a lot of amazing employees because of that.

    Advice to Management

Utilize what social media has to offer to grow your business. Family Video could do more to get their name out there, other than word of mouth. Store managers need to be given more resources to have an opportunity to be successful. And there needs to be more accountability at every level. Respect the ones at the front lines (part time associates). Give raises when they are earned, not based on seniority.
