I worked at Family & Children's Services full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

A good place to start a career in mental health for therapists, counsellors, or anyone wanting to work with a nonprofit.

      Cons

Toxic work environment - the higher up the hierarchy, the worse the treatment. Speaking to HR or management about salary increases, training, highering qualified staff, paying female workers the same as male workers result in frustration for the employee. Turnover is high - this leads to low morale amongst the staff members, higher workloads for individual staff members and teams, and burnout. Salaries are too low...

      Advice to Management

A nonprofit that serves the community, but doesn't deposit positive energy into its staff is shameful. The solution is simple - stop ignoring the signs that nothing is wrong.

      Cons

Agency politics, lots of secrecy when it comes to management, you can’t really ask any questions

      Advice to Management

      August 31, 2018CHRO

Keep in mind one benefit of having Vacation and Sick leave all in one PTO bank is that you could have more "Vacation" time off if you don't have to use your PTO time to cover sick days. F&CS offers new hires 15 PTO days per year; this increases to 20 PTO days per year after 2 ...

      Pros

Learning experience to say the least

      Cons

Toxic, disorganized managers. No team work. Employees are all scared because someone gets fired every week. The managers are "drunk with power", hostile, backstabbing and unkind. There is no help when you need it and despite being a care facility there is no emphasis on self are which is desperately needed because the consist ions and circumstances of the clients are extremely stressful. I worked at Family & Children's Services full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Fantastic coworkers with positive attitudes and willing to help. That's really it. Med nurses are nice too. Other than that not much.

      Cons

Lazy charge nurses who think helping the techs is below them. Management that gives you bones and is upset when you come up with a skeleton. They are surprised when they make you short staffed, and then things get behind when they pull someone off the floor, or someone is covering multiple areas. Also, check their websites directly, as they do not list their degree-required jobs on job search websites.

      Advice to Management

Listen to your staff, add more techs, allow people to move up when they can, and replace nurses that bully your techs, because they push them out the door so much faster.
