I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great company with a lot of opportunities for advancement. Fastenal is constantly looking for new innovative solutions to go to market with, which provides a competitive advantage on sales calls. Great 401K program with average health and dental benefits. Company truck to use during the work day with gas paid for by the company. Endless training opportunities to enhance your craft through their online and in person classes. Decentralized purchasing, you have the autonomy to make your own business decisions within reason.

    Cons

Long hours with below industry average pay. The commission structure is not employee friendly. Poorly staffed stores that result in longer hours for GM's.

    Advice to Management

Staff your stores better and focus more on retention. Bring back the assistant manager position, you would see a huge jump in sales with the operational support. Add bonus incentives for stores that consistently hit growth marks.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Freedom to run the business the way you need to to get your business growing. Very good resources available to help you through difficult decisions and product sourcing. Good training to get you the knowledge you need to lead your market.

    Cons

Need more employees at the branch to help for branches that have very large territories. They changed the pay structure and it seems the commission is a lot different (less) from what I can see a previous GM made. I understand the break even and the salary increase but it still seems lower.

I worked at Fastenal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The work is always changing and challenging because Fastenal is still growing. The product line is very diverse and the store inventories are expansive

    Cons

The good ol' boy system is very much in effect above store management. Regional management is disconnected from the branches and rarely engages beyond emails to the stores/branch managers.

    Advice to Management

Engage with your managers. Train your store managers more completely. The system of throwing a new employee or manager to the wolves and letting them sink or swim is costing the company a lot of great talent and loyal employees.
Engage in more thorough market research. Price the products more competitively. The company has a bad name for being overpriced on the items that draw buyers into the stores.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Tight knit team, little micromanaging from DM's, pick up skills needed to grow and flourish with another company with more opportunity to grow.

    Cons

No expense card to help take customers to lunch etc
Quick turnover with no opportunity to grow customer relationship
    Low salary
No opportunity to grow after GM (and that position is a glorified Outside Sales)

    Advice to Management

Give your GMs more tools to grow business, give your OS's and GM's higher salary to promote retention and grow customer relationships.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Vacation time at hire 2 weeks with a week of sick days. Close knit crew; everyone becomes friends and family. You get to make many decisions; you run the branch exactly how you want to.

    Cons

Expenses are on you; fastenal workwear is not supplied; no allowance towards cell phone (which is used daily) no allowance for customers; if you want to take a customer out to lunch it's your pocket. Family medical plan is extremely expensive, low salary compared to competitors. Stores are understaffed, turnover is terrible across the board and we are losing customers because of this

    Advice to Management

Restructure salaries; make the OSR's and GMs feel valued. Your losing sales and customers because the want a sales rep who they can build a relationship with.

I worked at Fastenal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility to run your store the way you want. Decentralized decision making is freely given, but often monitored to make sure it still fits within the company values. Lots of upward mobility for those willing to work hard and chase it. Structured working hours, weekends and evenings off.

    Cons

The bonus structure constantly changes, and makes it a bit hard to know what your commission will be.

    Advice to Management

Continue to train and mentor the good employees.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Growth Opportunity, depending on where you are. Great in company education and skills improment

    Cons

Not enough support in the locations that need it. Puts more work load on those that do come to work.

    Advice to Management

If a job is posted and a current employee applies. Give the employee an interview and at least give them the satisfaction. Don't cancel the post and add it again later just to hire someone else.
