I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great training modules and classes. Quick promotions from within the company. Great communication from higher ups with all the help you need to run your BOB.

    Cons

Too much work expected for little pay. Pay increases are not very large for moving up within store level positions.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees better for the amount of work they put in.

I have been working at Fastenal part-time

    Pros

Great company to work for, I've been there about 2 months and so far I've not had any issues. I'm still learning my job, which I do enjoy, and I can add forklift license to my resumé.

    Cons

You can be there 2 years or more before you can make full time.

    Advice to Management

Again, I've only been here 2 months. So far I have no complaints.

    Pros

    Great people to work with

    Cons

The pay and the hours aren't great. The people at my branch are very condescending. Don't ask questions because no one wants to answer them. I didn't enjoy Christmas this year because all I could think about while at dinner with my family was this awful job.

    Advice to Management

Make up a different pay structure so Fastenal can retain their employees. Once a Fastenal employee reaches one year, it's safe to say they most likely will move on because there's no up and no way to provide for yourself. Yes I know, I have heard, "sell more, make more". In theory that is a great idea, I'm not sure there isn't an employee who wouldn't want to sell more, but the market is difficult, over saturated, and being bled dry. To top it off your employees are over worked and just want to make it through the days. The mismanagement of the distribution system is also another factor. A regular statement at our branch is "If someone could figure out how to run our distribution centers, they would make millions"

    Pros

Learn how inventory is managed, work with great and friendly people, and can work any shift to fit your schedule.

    Cons

Hard labor is required, always on your feet, constant noice makes hearing and talking difficult, work is monotonous, and pay starts out too low.

I worked at Fastenal (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I work there in 2007 my options and picking the year on this Glassdoor thing wouldn't go far enough. My manager was a great guy to work for easy going. As long as we got our job done.

    Cons

The boys club. And they discriminate against age older people. Women have a harder time making it

    Advice to Management

To good starter at Job get your experience and move on. If you're a female you're going to have to prove yourself and remember you're not one of the guys.

    Pros

Learn a lot while working here, as well as a fun environment. You can learn a lot about how a business functions, as well as learn new sales techniques. They hire within

    Cons

The pay is not very good. It is hard to get a hold of upper management. Lots of product knowledge you must understand just to get by during the day.

    Advice to Management

Quit micro managing everything, as well as teach your employees more about what goes on and how to handle certain projects.

I have been working at Fastenal (Less than a year)

    Pros

Relaxed work environment, make your own daily schedule, room for promotion, given all the tools to succeed (except labor), innovative

    Cons

Expect you to be perfect in every area of a business, but don't staff branches sufficiently to support them. "flavor of the month" mentality with what's important.

    Advice to Management

Way too many MANAGERS outside of the store (DM, RVP, RFM) not enough LEADERS

I worked at Fastenal full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great team of people to work with, faily easy managed work schedule .

    Cons

Overall growth is not as strong and movement within the company is extremely challenging. Pay is also not very high for industry standards as well.

    Advice to Management

Growth from within is a great outlook, but employees need to be retained much better as there is alot of employee talent turnover.
