I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Innovative company that has significant growth potential, but has been around for 50 years. Decentralized decision-making, though has become more top-down initiative-driven. Promotes from within. Average benefits.

    Cons

Below-average pay for the industry. Initiatives sometimes detract from sales goals. No stock options.

    Advice to Management

Maintain focus on winning, and driving sales.

I have been working at Fastenal part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Love my job, get to drive around and make deliveries, my customers are awesome, decent work environment

    Cons

I don't get commission, I've been promised a full time job for months with nothing happening, corporate doesn't care about the front line workers, numbers game

    Advice to Management

Treat female and male workers the same, don't pitch the part time job as a stepping stone to full time if you don't plan on ever promoting!!

    Pros

Fastenal is a reliable work place with a lot of opportunities to learn and advance

    Cons

Unorganized, thin spread, micromanaged by upper managment. low pay

    Advice to Management

Some managers are great, some are unorganized and not quality management material

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

As a driver the job is salaried, pay is guaranteed to a degree. They seem to treat people well, work with you when need be, and are genuinely concerned with keeping their employees happy. The work isnt easy but it is simple and relatively easy compared to other jobs.

    Cons

So far the online training is repeated once in the company training then the outsourced third party training videos. Again not easy work and the way things get loaded are awkward.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Freedom to run the business the way you need to to get your business growing. Very good resources available to help you through difficult decisions and product sourcing. Good training to get you the knowledge you need to lead your market.

    Cons

Need more employees at the branch to help for branches that have very large territories. They changed the pay structure and it seems the commission is a lot different (less) from what I can see a previous GM made. I understand the break even and the salary increase but it still seems lower.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Its not terrible, lots of autonomy

    Cons

Its not great, archaic commission system, high wholesale prices makes pushing products harder.

    Advice to Management

Fix the archaic to ensure competitive pricing among competition.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Tight knit team, little micromanaging from DM's, pick up skills needed to grow and flourish with another company with more opportunity to grow.

    Cons

No expense card to help take customers to lunch etc
Quick turnover with no opportunity to grow customer relationship
    Low salary
No opportunity to grow after GM (and that position is a glorified Outside Sales)

    Advice to Management

Give your GMs more tools to grow business, give your OS's and GM's higher salary to promote retention and grow customer relationships.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of great co-workers, willing to train with no experience. They do give you independence and freedom.

    Cons

"Growth through customer service" is dead. Pay plans are a serious joke, except it is not funny. You may last a few years, but you will figure it out. They will find a way to plug the hole if you find a way to make money. And don't dare say anything, they are the biggest bunch of babies.

    Advice to Management

Wake up, wake up, wake up. You are losing your integrity. You have become like criminals, I have seen it with my own eyes.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Vacation time at hire 2 weeks with a week of sick days. Close knit crew; everyone becomes friends and family. You get to make many decisions; you run the branch exactly how you want to.

    Cons

Expenses are on you; fastenal workwear is not supplied; no allowance towards cell phone (which is used daily) no allowance for customers; if you want to take a customer out to lunch it's your pocket. Family medical plan is extremely expensive, low salary compared to competitors. Stores are understaffed, turnover is terrible across the board and we are losing customers because of this

    Advice to Management

Restructure salaries; make the OSR's and GMs feel valued. Your losing sales and customers because the want a sales rep who they can build a relationship with.
