    Pros

Hard work is recognized and rewarded. There's genuine opportunity for advancement within the company. Immediate management is accessible and responsive.

    Cons

Long hours, poor work-life balance, high turnover at lower levels. There's a high learning curve to be productive, and many employees leave before or soon after attaining the necessary knowledge.

    Advice to Management

Address OSR turnover. They are the face of the company to customers, but it's not treated as a long-term position.

I worked at Fastenal part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I did like the people I worked with. They did work around my school and internship schedule and paid well for part time.

    Cons

This job gave me the worst anxiety. Besides sitting in an office and watching videos, I had no real training. The second week, everyone left me in the store by myself for a few bourse with a bunch of customers who all needed things ordered. Then my manager called to prank me by yelling at me. Then came in to the store laughing. I almost quit that day. No one ever took the time to teach me anything. I get a lot of the job you learn as you go but no one trained me. After about two months I couldn't take it anymore and found a job elsewhere. I have to say it might just have been my location or area. I'm sure other locations aren't as bad.

    Advice to Management

Actually invest in training or your turnover will continue to be what it is.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great training modules and classes. Quick promotions from within the company. Great communication from higher ups with all the help you need to run your BOB.

    Cons

Too much work expected for little pay. Pay increases are not very large for moving up within store level positions.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees better for the amount of work they put in.

    Pros

Quick advancement, can easily move up in the company with hard work

    Cons

    High turnover rate among salespeople

    Advice to Management

Invest more in holding onto experienced employees rather than constantly replacing with new sales reps

    Pros

A lot of practical insight and work (sales) experience. Learn a lot about what drives sales and growth.

Very understanding and willing to work with students who are in school.

    Cons

Since it's dealing with industrial supplies, it requires a lot of heavy leg work. Moving inventory from the store to the clients. Putting away product in loud and dirty manufacturing plants.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I don't think many of the responses on here understand the Fastenal 401k. First, they match dollar for dollar on the first $2500 you put in. Second, depending on profitability of they company you can get up to $2500 more if you put $5000 in. I've seen about 80 cents on the dollar some years. It's handled through Merrill Lynch with a variety of mutual funds as well as Fastenal stock.

    Cons

No cons on the 401k benefits.
