I worked at Fasthosts Internet full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They let us run the sales side as we needed to and plenty of vacation time.

    Cons

UK management did not understand the US market and we're not agile enough to change.

I have been working at Fasthosts Internet full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

A really good mix of personalities and experience with some members of staff having been with the company from the start, to those only here a few months. Good salaries and benefits packages, free parking at Gloucester Docks is also helpful. Supportive managers who are interested in 'people as people', everyone has a sense of autonomy to just get on with their jobs. A friendly and sociable bunch with running clubs, games nights, after work drinks and two company parties a year.

    Cons

The HQ German processes are not conducive to good business practice and can significantly hamper productivity. The business strategy seems conflicted most of the time. Everyone wants to do well and use their own expertise/experience but Germany has no interest in the talent on offer, a very misplaced, overly corporate approach. The upside is that the products are good and the Fasthosts staff are great, so if you can focus on that, it's a good company to work for.

    Advice to Management

Challenge poor HQ practices with more vigor and less fear. Address the concerns of staff via company updates.

I have been working at Fasthosts Internet full-time

    Pros

Good mix of personalities and generally everyone gets along. There are plenty of clubs and social get-togethers to join in with, like the running club which head out most lunchtimes. The offices are newly refurbed and are very spacious, nicely tucked away from the main road with views of the docks area. Free parking, healthcare, pension, good salary etc all helps!

    Cons

Overly controlled by German HQ which leaves staff feeling under-utilised and undervalued. HQ processes are illogical and lengthy, with HQ micro-management often undermining their own business strategy. This is a real shame as there is tremendous talent mixed with a genuine dedication within Fasthosts which goes completely unnoticed by its overly-corporate parent.

    Advice to Management

Challenge German HQ decisions/processes more. Consider less working hours. Share information with the entire company. But, saying all of that, this is a good place to work and a good mid-career move.

    Pros

Good salary + reasonable training. Decent benefits package. Good team spirit. A fair amount of interesting technology. Not overly hierarchical. Strong investment in new infrastructure. Reasonably flexible working.

    Cons

Horrible HR. Too much involvement from head office (Germany) resulting in confused strategy. Still a fair amount of legacy infrastructure, focus tents to be on new products (or whatever the current flavour of the month from germany is) rather than retiring the legacy crap.

    Advice to Management

Logging/acknowledging risks isn't the same as fixing them. Spend a bit more engineering time on decommissioning legacy platforms. Tell Germany to ram it.

I worked at Fasthosts Internet full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Quite flexible environment (depends on what team you work on), outstanding people to work with. Salary is rather average. Quite good benefits package. I would definitely recommend that company to someone who would like to "get to the next level", gain some extra and corporate experience and then look for another job.

    Cons

Company doesn't invest in people. You will get the training if you really fight for it. Extra skills gained have no reflection on your salary. There is no bonuses for anything (ever). Appraisal (pay raise) system is a real joke. Doesn't matter whether you are very good, bad or in the middle whether you want to do more or less or nothing. There is no profit from being outstanding. Badly managed in many cases. There is a lot of (bad) influence from Germany.

    Advice to Management

Look after your people as they are leaving you. Listen to what they say and value it over any statistics. They know what they do and do it really well.

I have been working at Fasthosts Internet full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great working environment, friendly team with many having 5+ years experience. Opportunities to work with new technologies and on large scale systems.
    Free parking in city center

    Cons

Product decisions are controlled by parent company out of Germany

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what your doing. All are very approachable, communication is good and I like the open door policy.

I worked at Fasthosts Internet full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Nice working environment, lots of staff with 5 ys + show something they are doing is right. Excellent management team led by SImon, door is always open which is rare.

    Cons

Little too much interference from the German parent however that's corporate life I guess! There is a great team in Gloucester just a shame they have less involvement in decision making now.

    Advice to Management

Most of the management team is great, the one's who struggle need to understand the industry better to enable them to better dictate strategy.

I worked at Fasthosts Internet full-time

    Pros

Excellent company culture, great team of people. Progression and staff development actively encouraged. Open and accessible senior management team in the UK.

    Cons

Some challenges with old reputation and consumer perception due to former ownership. Overall group control out of Germany posed challenges with cultural understanding and local market demands.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing, your support of your employees is exemplary and your clarity and transparency of vision builds on this exponentially.

I have been working at Fasthosts Internet full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Coffee machines in kitchens, free fruit, 2 parties a year, paid for taxis back from parties, older staff who remember former culture

    Cons

Dishonesty from senior management about long term plans, unnecessary redundancies, losing own identity and becoming absorbed by parent company. No company wide communication. Building falling to pieces. Data centre a mess.

    Advice to Management

Be honest about the businesses long term plans. Staff respect honesty even if the plans include job losses. Allow staff the respect to make their own decisions. Respect employees area of specialism
