I have been working at Federal-Mogul full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Steady work, and the employees are all willing to do their jobs without question.

    Cons

There is no work life balance. Playing favorites is a game that is practiced. Its not what you know it's who you know.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people that have been doing the job, they are the ones in the pit, or on the line. Your way isn't always the best, especially if you sit at a desk all day.

I worked at Federal-Mogul (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Mature product lines - Good brand name products - Should be leader in these commodity products. Salaries are market competitive.

    Cons

Non- American upper management. They hate Americans, our way of life, and our free speech. Tried too many gimmicks to increase profits - Management refused to recognize they are selling commodity products. Management did not invest in plants, people, equipment, or technologies. Someone should investigate the reasons for the closure of the Summerton, SC plant. You would be surprised. Former CEO admitted the wrong plant was chosen for closure - this hurt over 300 working families - FM should compensate these families for their actions in closing the Summerton, SC plant.

    Advice to Management

Dump the Euro and South American managers. Hire Americans. Sell company to an US manufacturer that products will compliment and provide more vertical product integration.

I worked at Federal-Mogul (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-Historic brands with good market reputation.
-Lots of long term employees with 20+ years experience and huge amounts of knowledge.
-The Skokie facility still has a "small business" feel instead of feeling like a large corporation. Not as many politics or silos as you would expect in a company of nearly 50k employees (until your project takes you outside of Skokie).
-Skokie has Manufacturing/Engineering/Testing/Quality/etc all in one site. Great environment to learn a lot very quickly.

    Cons

-Budget cuts hitting R&D. Slowly turning market leading brands into also rans that are living on reputation instead of innovation. They have also been targeting long term employees that make higher salaries for layoffs... which results in talented younger employees not seeing much of a future for themselves in FM.
-Shifting priorities due to upper management incompetence. Large projects where the target completely changed 3 times due to upper management changing their mind.
-Below average compensation. Top performers are paid market average if they are lucky.
-Constant budget games that impact business needs to satisfy short term Wall Street targets. Travel restrictions, hiring freezes, etc
-Upper management recently attempted to use some heavy handed tactics with customers, resulting in a pretty significant amount of lost sales. The reduced volume resulted in some employees losing their jobs while the upper management kept theirs. This is fairly typical in modern America but still hurts morale.

    Advice to Management

-Stop with the ambitious targets that create false emergencies. I can only think of 1 of my 5 years where the financial health of the company was not a concern at some point.
-Invest in R&D and marketing to turn these brands back into market leaders. No one wants to work for an average company that is handcuffed by lack of investment.

    Pros

good money, not far from home,

    Cons

management doesn't pay attention to the employees. they do as they please no matter what
insurance is outrageous, never use it cause I don't get the deductible paid before the end is up.
leads and supervisors don't know anything about the jobs. but they are always right. the moral is awful.

    Advice to Management

take the management away and give their jobs to the people in the factory that knows what they are doing, the operators in the building could run this place better.

    Pros

Weekly pay, location, and benifits. They have a lot of career opportunities because they fire people due to a ridiculous point system. So, I'm not sure if that's a pro or con.

    Cons

Filthy, dangerous conditions, VERY low pay, lazy workers, horrible management, 5 minute breaks, favoritism, they don't value their employees... I could go on and on.

    Advice to Management

You don't value anyone, yet you're very successful... and that's cool, but don't have expectations that everything should run how you intend to run it. Oh, and maybe the "Manager" shouldn't express that their workers could do better elsewhere... even though it's true.

    Positive Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

A lot of opportunity for growth
The industry began to consolidate very recently, so there is a lot of project opportunities on the marketting side
No "always connected" culture. When you leave, you leave.
Those above you will actually listen and consider your project proposals

    Cons

Health insurance leaves much to be desired.
Sitcom jabs at corporate workplaces now hits too close to home.
Cubicle life, unless you're in upper management, IT or Digital Media.

    Advice to Management

Look into better and more diverse health care options. As a young person, I can get much better ($150 vs. $1400 deductable), cheaper ($200 vs. $300) insurance from the marketplace than what the company offers.
