I worked at Federal Signal (More than 8 years)

    Pros

A lot of hard working people

    Cons

NEW Management is not knowledgeable about the company and insist on doing their way which don't involve showing any appreciation or care for the employees, NEW management from the CEO down is driving the company in the ground. All the good managers are leaving this company like the plague.

    Advice to Management

The new CEO Jennifer Sherman needs to learn the business and learn the how to value employees then start developing that philosophy all the way down the chain of command.

I have been working at Federal Signal full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

My co-workers are very nice and the new $250k foyer is very pretty.

    Cons

Used to be a pleasure working for them when long term managers were in charge who understood the business and knew how to treat people but not now. The empty suits now in charge at UP and Oak Brook are all leaders in name only who have alienated many employees with their corporate CYA attitudes, brown nosing and trendy buzzwords. It's criminal how a 100 year old, once great company has come to this. Many rumors of malfeasance by top management are rife in the company and many are planning to leave.

    Advice to Management

Quit patting yourselves on the back and listen to your people. Stop piling 2 or 3 jobs on people when you don't replace terminated or laid off people.

I have been working at Federal Signal full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The people and the former family friendly culture which is unfortunately gone now.

    Cons

Upper management a joke, more concerned now with trendy buzzwords and other BS motivational crap. New female CEO and PSS Senior VP's are a both viewed as incompetent out in the field. We can't believe this is the best we can do. Many, many long time employees are planning their exit strategies since it feels like we've now hit the iceberg!

    Advice to Management

Really not much to say until promotions aren't granted based upon who's brown nosing who at Oak Brook. The real leaders are overlooked for those who spin the best BS. Amateur hour new female CEO is clueless.

I have been working at Federal Signal full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Nice people to work with. Decent facilities but some show signs of age

    Cons

Buddy buddy system when promotions come around, Poor work condition leaving 80% of the work force looking for jobs, low pay. Leadership and organizational structure changes frequently, which also changes the direction and goals of the organization. Sometimes it's difficult to keep up with the change.

    Advice to Management

talk to employees before you make drastic changes.

I have been working at Federal Signal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There is a lot of autonomy to solve problems on your own.
No day is ever the same, and we're always learning some new technology.

    Cons

Leadership and organizational structure changes frequently, which also changes the direction and goals of the organization. Sometimes it's difficult to keep up with the change.

    Advice to Management

Pick one strategy carefully, and follow it; be consistent and over communicate what the organization is doing - because right now there is very little communication. Consider sending an org chart so employees know what the organization looks like.

I have been working at Federal Signal full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Average benefits. pretty decent pay when you're a union member.

    Cons

Sometimes hard to work hard when your neighbor does nothing but gets the same pay. I see alot of favortism.

    Advice to Management

Dont fix whats not broke... Upper management doesn't realize how valuable some employee positions are and just start making un-needed changes and getting rid of people. In this day and age, its hard to see good people lose their jobs.

I have been working at Federal Signal full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

good hours for salary people, never worked a weekend and very rarely you needed to stay late

    Cons

no company direction as everybody is looking to meet the numbers, which are poorly calculated and forecasted anyway. Many union workers know how to play the game really well and they do just the minimal. Seems that a lot of people is there because they have enough seniority but almost no one shows a real desire to learn. Same thing with many salary employees, lack of professional attitude, engineers can work together and with others but supervisors are bad at disciplining people and following up. Schedulers don't even know how to create orders so everything is on a please-make-this system...I don't have time/send me an email are pretty common answers when you ask for help

    Advice to Management

I guess the "healing" process would be a long and painful but they got to start some time and the sooner the better. Having a training and a disciplinary program that would allow employees to increase their knowledge and skills and the a system that would hold them accountable should be started.

I worked at Federal Signal full-time

    Pros

Decent pay unless you start now in the union, very friendly co-workers in most areas, understanding immediate supervisors, and the feeling that knowing your good work is keeping people safe.

    Cons

Terrible HR, terrible union, terrible labor relations that harm the company as well as the worker, and most of all terrible middle and upper management.

    Advice to Management

It's not the 1930s anymore. Wake up and step forward finally instead of importing more from China as your solution to increase profit margins.

I worked at Federal Signal full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    OK Benefits.
    Reasonable work hours.
    Reasonable salary.

    Cons

The company is destined for breakup. The parts are more valuable then the whole, and the decentralized management systems do not work. There is disarray, and a lack of direction among senior management. The left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. With that disarray, you have a free-for-all with mid-level-management playing by their own rules. Too many managers, who won't roll their sleeves up and get dirty, and not enough "line" workers, which causes resentment among the rank and file. CEO is out of touch, and the mass exodus of mid-level and some senior management is evidence of that. Somehow, he has shareholders convinced he has a "plan". Where's the proof?

    Advice to Management

Accept the fact that the business is not going to grow, the culture is not going to get better, and product quality is going to continue to deterioriate. Once you accept that, make a decision -- go down with the ship, or jump while you can.......
