I have been working at Federal Signal (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Look busy and you won't be bothered, nobody has a spine to discipline and when it does happen, nothing is really done about it, worse than high school.

    Cons

Management and engineering need to get their stuff together. Just because you have a bachelor degree don't mean you know the secrets to the universe

    Advice to Management

All new management and engineering hires need to spend time on the floor before setting loose. ME's will never be appreciated by waiving the degree mommy and daddy paid for in front of the guys who have decades of experience.

I worked at Federal Signal full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There is room for advancement.. I started as a temp and because I performed well I was offered a permanent position with the company. However, because an opening in the field I desired was not available, the company found different areas to employ me in until one was open that I desired.

    Cons

After the president of the division made some poor software upgrade decisions, the company lost a considerable amount of money and customers. Because of the financial loss, the company at large decided to let go of a number of employees.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees when they report problems. Don't just assume that management is always right. Sometimes, management is the problem and employees and customers suffer.

I have been working at Federal Signal full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

People at the plant level are great and through some of the ranks. Old leadership really cared and knew something about everyone. Over years, senior leadership driven by the dollar vs social responsibility of the people who they effect.

    Cons

Company goes thru periods when really good but lots of change and hard to hold onto good talent.

    Advice to Management

People are your most important peice of business

I worked at Federal Signal full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A longstanding, stable company that will be around for awhile.

    Cons

A bit myopic when it comes to leveraging software and technology. Coming from a manufacturing background, they have yet to embrace the 21st century.

    Advice to Management

There is more than a little cronyism taking place here, at least in the IT department. Time to clean house. Also, IT talent has been fleeing due to mismanagement.
