I worked at Federal Way Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great Benefits, excellent wellness days plan and a supportive and very active union that works to get you what you need! I was fortunate to have a WONDERFUL principal!

    Cons

Excessive amounts of district level requirements that didn't seem to benefit our practice as teachers or our students.

I have been working at Federal Way Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pay is not the lowest in the area especially if you work at ESC. School staff really care about students

    Cons

Salaried employees are expected to work most nights and weekends. Employees are micro managed. Organizational structure is top heavy

    Advice to Management

Ideas for district are not unsound. The implementation however is seriously flawed. Change for changes sake alone is not a good policy. Bringing in large number of upper level management from Spokane a far less diverse district to solve problems in an extremely diverse district smacks of white privilege. Interesting considering superintendent is black.

I worked at Federal Way Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-Third party grants and donations allowed us 1:1 technology and ample school supplies.
-Most coworkers were passionate and really cared about kids' success.

    Cons

-Lots of good ideas with insufficient follow-through--disorganized.
-Leadership (Superintendent) is disconnected from the realities of the schools. Made decisions that did not benefit schools, such as curtailing suspensions without appropriate recourse for teachers and site admin.

I have been working at Federal Way Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are great teachers and staff in every building.

    Cons

The last couple years have seen a serious decline in employee job satisfaction throughout the district. The autonomy to choose the best strategies to help their students learn has been completely revoked and replaced with lock-step pacing calendars with poor resources. The upper administration is becoming bloated and teachers are fleeing the district looking for better climate and pay.

    Advice to Management

Superintendent needs to quit micromanaging. To quote Steve Jobs " It doesn't make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do."

I have been working at Federal Way Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working with the other teachers within the building has been wonderful. The community and the students are great.

    Cons

HR is very disorganized. You have to make copies of everything you send them because they are notorious for losing paperwork. They make you jump many hoops to recognize teaching experience from outside the district.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Federal Way Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The teachers and ESAs are great, but given current administration, really good staff are leaving in large numbers, myself included.

    Cons

I was so very disappointed. The administration does not care about employees how what they do effects entire families. They do not care about the merit and quality of a staff member. Most administrators seem to be more concerned about avoiding lawsuits and issues rather than actually helping the staff and students. It's not about quality and care.

    Advice to Management

Think about the actual people you serve and being servant leaders. Have a heart.

    Pros

The colleague are very supportive and team oriented.

    Cons

The system is top heavy that enforces policy without procedure. There is not a good strategies ffor the implementation of change in the organization. The leadership is transactional rather than transformational.

    Advice to Management

Incorporate some consistent leadership and bias training.

I worked at Federal Way Public Schools part-time

    Pros

The kids everyone loves lunch time!, meeting new people, fast paced work, going to different schools allows you to pick which ones you would be interested in working at in a regular position. Union position.

    Cons

Some schools that staff were really unwelcoming, I just chose not to go back to those ones. You get treated like a cog in the wheel by the district. You will never make enough money to live on, its very part time.
