    Pros

The firm was a very good place to work. Things have changed and not for the better. To much favoritism for the younger staff and not for professionlism or competence.

    Cons

The management is blind to what some employees do. Many employees are hard workers and not "in your face" social butterflies. Yet management seems to prefer the social butterflies to the hard workers. Especially the ones that brown nose them.

    Advice to Management

Senior Management should really stand back and take a good look at the managers they have in place and realize that some of them are not people persons and treat their staff with disdain and sometimes cruelly. Once a leopard always a leopard and the spots will never change. You can take a panther and tame it and domesticate it, but in reality it is still a panther and their inate being is to be a panther. Hopefully before the firm collapses because of this blindness, Senior management will wake up to the fact that management is letting go of some really good employees and keeping the young, thin, but very incompetent ones.

I worked at Fenwick & West full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The San Francisco office at least is in a lovely location, and the interior decoration is nice.

    Cons

It's very stratified. Although attorneys depend on administrative staff, the two classes of employees are treated completely differently, not only in terms of respect but in the matter of what benefits each is eligible to receive. It makes it difficult to have a cohesive work culture.

    Advice to Management

You may have employees performing different functions, and of course the attorneys should be more highly compensated, but unless you can do without the administrative staff you should make it clear that they're valued. Solicit and listen to their opinions.

I have been working at Fenwick & West (Less than a year)

    Pros

A lot of perks. Many people are extremely welcoming and warm, even the attorneys. Good benefits and average pay.

    Cons

Some supervisors in the Billing & Collections Department run the Department with an iron fist. They act more like military officers and the Manager doesn’t like any sort of opposition regardless of how insightful or constructive it may be. The Department has a high turn over due to some difficult personalities. Also, they say is a permanent position, and that’s a huge lie. The position is a Temp to Hire and everyone in the Department will make feel (even go out their way) like you’re a temp,
Even after the 90 day probation period is over, they continue to give you performance reviews and threaten to fire you if you make one mistake!

    Pros

    Some really great people here.

    Cons

Still very hierarchal in nature (what can you say, it's a law firm!). Great if you are an attorney or paralegal, but not so much if you are staff.

    Advice to Management

None for staff. Just come do you job.

I have been working at Fenwick & West full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fenwick really tries to make people happy through events and happy hours and fitness incentives. The people are extremely welcoming and warm, even the attorneys. The overall culture is young and fun but it is still a a law firm.

    Cons

The middle management in this company has a lot of problems. In some departments, the management acts more like military officers and do not like any sort of opposition regardless of how insightful or constructive it may be. There is extremely high turn over as of late because of people being over worked and under appreciated. There have been plenty of red flags about several members of management but they are still working at Fenwick. If you are going to be working as a staff member here, I highly recommend not giving your opinion or input on anything, it will just get you into trouble.

    Pros

The staff and attorney's here are wonderful people. They really make it worth coming to work.

    Cons

The management really needs to pay attention to culture fit when they are hiring new staff. The reason Fenwick used to function so well is because everyone was on the same wavelength. Now, the staff in my department is not as cohesive because of the new people that do not understand the Fenwick culture.

    Advice to Management

Please listen to your staff and allow them to interact with their new coworkers before you onboard them!

    Pros

Collaborative work environment where you can easily walk from office to office for information from associates. Plenty of after work get togethers.

    Cons

The work can absolutely be dry and boring at times. The partners in the company are also typically "ghosts" around the office, only seen a few times per year.

    Advice to Management

More team building events to bring everyone together, from partners in the company down to the first year associates and or assists.
