I have been working at Ferguson Enterprises full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Ferguson is a very good place to work and the IT environment is maturing rapidly. Being a part of this change process is exciting and rewarding as Ferguson moves from family business to 21st century technology leader.

    Cons

Substantial simultaneous changes to the work environment and organization structure seems chaotic at times and uncertain at others.

I worked at Ferguson Enterprises full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good compensation, decent potential for career opportunities if one makes the right connections, job security

    Cons

To tweak a quote from "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly"-"You see, in this company there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with work life balance and those who work." Managers have the tendency to play favorites and favorites get all kinds of perks like being able to come in after 9am and leave at 4pm, the option to work from home, taking whole weeks for vacation, and having little supervision (multiple 20 minute coffee breaks, chatting with friends, and making personal phone calls every single day). Other employees are expected to work until after 6pm (even later than some of the managers) doing the bulk of the work with no breaks and little to no vacation while being micro-managed every step of the way.

    Advice to Management

Review current processes and the distribution of workload to address inefficiencies and reduce the possibility of burnout. For example, if one employee spends an hour each day sitting on top of another employee's desk chatting, maybe redirect some of the responsibilities from the employees who are drowning in work to those individuals.

I have been working at Ferguson Enterprises full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Benefits, camaraderie, opportunity, work environment

    Cons

Somewhat siloed with some non-traditional organizational quirks, long hours in branches or branch support positions (45+ per week), immature structure and administrative processes compared to companies of similar size and age, foreign ownership.

    Advice to Management

Change focus at HQ from getting in done to getting in done right and with appropriated processed implemented and documented. Pay more attention to career planning for all employees, not just the management trainees.

I have been working at Ferguson Enterprises full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of career paths available, management is generally supportive of employees who want to expand their horizons and move into new roles.

    Cons

The HQ tech center annex is overcrowded and uncomfortable. Ferguson also has to share profits with Wolseley PLC, which means Ferguson employees often bear the brunt of poor performance in Europe even when Ferguson does well.

    Advice to Management

Get a better building with some perks like a fitness center.

    Pros

Ferguson is a great company overall.

    Cons

Politics undermined the ability to advance skills

    Advice to Management

Seriously consider having another/an additional corporate location outside of the Tidewater area, to open up the candidate pool and put pressure on career squatters

    Pros

The IT Group in Newport News was great for me. My boss was one of the best I have ever had. She was considerate and thoughtful of me even during a difficult time in my life. Better than average pay for the area (Newport News, Va.) with bonuses, 401Ks, and annual raise. Lovely people with great senses of humor in our group. I would recommend this company.

    Cons

After joining the company, I was left to myself, (after initial training), my team was spread out to other projects. The IT departments seemed to continually work against themselves. Lack of communications on changes made in one group would severely impact another without warning. Very poor change management process. There were frequent changes between high-level goals or projects. One would start and be interrupted by a new "hot" button. Work load would shift from one priority to another without prior notice. Without any advance notice people can be fired because a senior manager doesn't like you or feel you’re doing the job well enough. No chance given for any corrective action or to fix a perception just let go without specifics as to why. People would get fired and walked out that day without any prior notice - mostly QA people. Most of that seemed personality driven vs. ability driven. Managers should try to work with people to fix issues first. Otherwise Ferguson was a positive experience in many ways.

    Advice to Management

Great company but the IT group was driven from pillar to post by continuing business changes that would come out of the blue. Give employees opportunity to fix performance issues, have a process to do that. Value people enough to help them succeed.

I worked at Ferguson Enterprises full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Standardization, community outreach programs, snack kiosk in break room, there are a few really talented IT veterans that I enjoyed working with, casual dress

    Cons

Below industry and regional pay, poor work/life balance, no chance for being promoted from within, inexperienced IT managers hire based on certs and not actual knowledge, they hired someone who blatanly lied on their resume because they liked their personality and the rest of IT has to support, mentor and pick up that guy's slack, micomanaging and seagull managers are the norm, contractors have little chance of being brought on full time, Tech Center facility is infested with roaches and in a dangerous area and the HVAC never works, no training, no mentoring, no knowledge share, products are deployed to the associates without telling Support or even teaching them how to support them, frontline Support reps have no industry knowledge causing ticket churn and cannot resolve anything, your bonus is based on management's discretion ... hope you are good at kissing butt

    Advice to Management

It's 2016 Ferguson. If you want to reach your $25B goal you need to start allocating some budget to IT. Back in 1950 Mr Peebles got to goal by working 60 hours a week. That will no longer cut it and further, today's staff deserve work/life balance. Ferguson needs to trust and value employees.

    Pros

Dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment. Co-workers are knowledgeable and pleasant to relate.

    Cons

Weak IT management. Pay for IT resources is below IT professional market. IT Management has many individuals lacking sufficient IT expertise to manage an enterprise of its size.

    Advice to Management

Promote capable associates. Stop making rewards out of promotions and putting individuals in positions for which they lack the competence.
