I worked at Fermilab as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Cool researchers, high talent colleague. I truly enjoy working with them and had learned a lot from them.
    - Great lab leader.
    - Encourage for innovation.
    - Regular working hours.
    - Well paid.

    Cons

    - Old facilities.
    - Dorms are full of visiting students and scholars, and the choice of off-campus housing is limited.
    - Bureaucratism. When you send a request, it may take weeks to get approval. Also, the hiring could drag out for months.
    - Not many opportunities for promotion.

    Advice to Management

    - I don't know what to do with the bureaucratism, but it is a problem.
    - Could renovate facilities in the gym.

I have been working at Fermilab as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent place to gain in experience on hands on particle physics.
Have opportunity to work with engineers

    Cons

You need to be active and find mentor soon.
People are quite busy and forget about you if you don't keep bugging.

    Advice to Management

It would be nice if visitors had chance to meet all scientists and learn about their projects.
It would be nice to join several projects and find best fit for interns.

    Pros

The cafeteria food is good. The credit union is convenient. Nature at sight is great. Middle management is OK so long as their egos are fed.

    Cons

No place for people with disabilities. Don't ask questions, as you will be labeled Stupid. Supervisors rip people behind their back, sometimes to their face! Don't expect support from Human Resources, the Anti Harassment Policy is BS! After 20 years, I wasn't given an exit interview. Vulgar harassment through the Email system is prevalent. Good thing I found a real job at twice the pay. DOE needs to step in!

    Advice to Management

Decommission and sell the assets and the Bison! Go condos with a golf course! Fermi has outlived it's usefulness! The LHC is all we need!

I have been working at Fermilab full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of technical expertise and resources. There is a real possibility to build and develop detectors. The 5 years contracts allow you to commit to long term projects.

    Cons

There is an uncanny number of old people that contributes very little. Depressing atmosphere. The lab is committed to be the only single-purpose lab, this makes it difficult to collaborate with universities sometimes.

    Advice to Management

The lab pushes the postdocs to have a leading role in whatever project they get involved. This makes it very difficult to collaborate and work together.

I have been working at Fermilab full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Huge engineering and technical resources. They still have the technical expertise to build almost anything you can think of.
Scientist ussualy have some freedom to choose what projects they want to work on.
If the project you are working on gets support from the management you can expect a lot of resouces

    Cons

A lot of bureaucracy and paperwork. Lots of the resources are wasted in nonsensical review loops.
It's not easy to collaborate, the lab strong;y rewards you if you have "leading role" in the projects you are involved. This may sound ok but in practice it means that you are not acknowledged if you work in a project with other colleges that are your pairs (shared leading role).

    Advice to Management

The lab should find a way to keep small projects alive wile still focusing the resources on the main projects. The loss of technical expertise (by letting go technicians and engineers) could be the end of the lab.
Should find a way to create a more cooperative environment.

I have been working at Fermilab full-time

    Pros

Extremely smart people; interesting work; surprisingly competitive compensation; great work-life balance with reasonable hours; flex work schedule; café and gym on site; lots of professional development classes; opportunity for advancement; art events with an on-site gallery; an amazing campus that feel like a park preserve.

    Cons

A little stagnant and set in its way due to people working here for decades; difficult to implement changes; far away from the city, so feel a bit remote.

    Advice to Management

Continue to bring the lab forward into the digital age, maybe a little faster.

Not on the cutting edge when it comes to engineering.
Not a lot of chance for advancement.

    Advice to Management

    Modernize.
