I worked at Ferris State University part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great working environment with lots of extra benefits.

    Cons

They don't value employees. There is no loyalty to good employees.

    Advice to Management

Realize that you have excellent employees already. Don't simply take the person with the most education!!

    Pros

You do meaningful work and really have the opportunity to impact peoples lives positively. As an RA, it was nice getting room + board as well as an opportunity to work the front desk at minimum wage. Also, despite all of the cons, management is beginning to get more organized.

    Cons

No standardization of policies across residence halls, lack of support from upper management, lack of organization, lack of communication, too much gossip.

    Advice to Management

HDs and RAs need more support and more open lines of communication with upper management.

I have been working at Ferris State University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The students are great and so are many of the colleagues.

    Cons

Management works it so that there are rarely new tenure lines and those who are non-tenured are given very few benefits or opportunities. Degrees are valued more than loyalty, experience, excellence in teaching, and ambition.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees a fair wage! Treat your employees like human beings. Show some appreciation for effort and loyalty.

    Pros

Clean environment, safe environment. No driving in rush hour traffic. If you can get full time employment the benefits and pay is competitive.

    Cons

It is very hard to go from part time to full time. Often times it is not what you know, but who you know. Often times expect part time people to work the same schedules as full time people, without the benefits or pay.

I worked at Ferris State University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The work environment allows for flexibility when needing time off.
    Amazing benefits if full time.
Knowledgable colleagues and awesome student staff.

    Cons

Ferris is way too political. Some people are doing the bare minimum in their roles and are getting praised, receiving promotions, and getting support, while others are working their butts off, but receive no recognition.

    Advice to Management

Stop with the favoritism!!! Be open to new ideas. Provide adequate support when someone is working the job of 2+ people.
