I have been working at Filmetrics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I was not manipulated or threatened into posting a review, period. Personally, I'm not a fan of this website because it allows anyone to review a company, and hide behind an anonymous post, regardless of whether or not they are or were ever actually an employee of the reviewed company. However, I felt compelled to offset some of the negative postings against this company and its employees. I have been working for Filmetrics for over 10 years. Outside of a very few, I work with fun and creative people, who are serious about their work and care enough to go the extra mile to help each other succeed and produce great products! Filmetrics is a small company and yet began offering health benefits before it was required. Paid Time Off is generous and management continues to assess and expand its offerings. Furthermore, there is nothing but growth opportunity at Filmetrics for just about anyone that proves capable. This is, after all, a company that continues to grow and prosper every year.

    Cons

I agree with an earlier post about surrounding road construction and subsequent traffic. If you live north, east or south of Sorrento Valley, the commute can be challenging, to say the least. Also, for those that are intimidated by and prefer a buffer between upper-management and themselves, Filmetrics is a smaller company and interaction with upper-management is inevitable. However, some would consider this access and visibility to upper-management a positive.

    Advice to Management

Continue to seek out more employees with a positive attitude and who have previous work experience; these seem to be the employees that appreciate a company like Filmetrics.

    Pros

This is a great place to work if you like to complain about your job. You will have an endless stream of anecdotes to serve up to your audience.

    Cons

I hate to say it, but the employees that stick around at this company tend to be either completely checked out, lazy, or rotten to the core (mark me down for completely checked out). I'd also venture to guess that all positive reviews here were written under threat and/or manipulation--the CEO tends towards bullying as a way to get things done. You can survive here if you need the money, just always remind yourself: you are not crazy--you are just in a toxic environment.

    Advice to Management

I don't believe management's heart is open to advice, but just in case:

    - Kindness unlocks doors that were thought to be closed forever.
    - Each morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.
    - A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.

I have been working at Filmetrics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great company to work for. Due to its size (<50 employees) it is very dynamic and you are likely to have more than one task/role. This is great, because it makes no two days alike. Colleagues are hard working, driven, motivated, and eager to help. This creates a great atmosphere; I come to work everyday with enthusiasm and at the end of the day I leave feeling we have accomplished something.
Contrary to some older reviews on this site, management has great vision and does care about its employees. The Company President goes out of his way to make his employees feel comfortable. Add to that his drive for being green, with solar panels on the roof and 3 (!) car chargers in the parking lot that are completely free (even if you don't work here). He even lets employees borrow his electric car (how's that for caring).
Work hard and you will be rewarded. But it is not all work and no play. There is the occasional (or daily) ping pong, company lunches, and holiday or work-related celebrations.
The new (2014) office space is fantastic, with a modern open floor plan, which creates a vibrant atmosphere and encourages working together.
I hope to work here for many more years.

    Cons

Not too much to complain about. Perhaps some more flexibility with regards to PTO.
Traffic around Sorrento Valley (i.e. 5/805 split) gets pretty hairy

    Advice to Management

    Keep going strong

    Pros

Most of the employees are great to work with, the pay is great, aesthetically pleasing work environment.

    Cons

This was by far the worst company I have ever worked for. The comment about the owner having a deep-seated mistrust of all his employees is 100% true. I don't know of anyone that is happy working there. The president is socially awkward and really lacks managerial qualities. There is virtually no training for employees, and all of the negative comments I've ever heard about the company are all true. Upper management lacks the social qualities that could make the job enjoyable, the comment about being belittled is true, and sadly the negativity throughout made it a difficult work environment.

I have been working at Filmetrics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The company is organized and managed in a way that makes it clear they care deeply about their employees and customers. As an employee, dealing with customers is a pleasant experience because the company's products work well, so the customers are happy. This makes for a great work experience. The employees are hard-working, yet fun to be around. The company frequently does stuff like buying lunch for everyone, or hosting an afternoon event with snacks and drinks at a local restaurant. The company holiday party in December was particularly memorable - it was great to have the staff from around the world gather in San Diego for training and a formal dinner. The fact that there are many employees who've worked at the company for more than 5 years and several for more than 15 years is clear evidence that it's a great place to work. The newly remodeled headquarters building is well-designed, with an open floor plan and lots of natural light - even windows and skylights that open to allow fresh air to circulate. Visitors frequently comment on what a cool space it is. The ping pong table in the break area is pretty popular - especially on Fridays at the end of the day. Finally, the steady growth of the company has meant a continued growth in number of employees, resulting an lots of opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

Road construction on local freeways is making it difficult to get to/from the office during certain parts of the day. Occasional military jet flyovers interrupt conversations.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing, bring in more great people, and don't be afraid to let go those who are not pulling their weight.

    Pros

Great working conditions with much room for career growth. Beautiful, modern office in Sorrento Valley. Work hard and you will be rewarded. Co-workers are friendly and helpful Senior management is intelligent and provides you with the tools to succeed. The boss really cares about employees and wants them to be happy. The days go by quickly but at the end of day you feel like you made a difference. Ping-pong parties are a plus!

    Cons

    Benefits could always be better.

    Advice to Management

More time off depending on amount of time you have been with the company.

    Pros

Decent hourly rate of pay with nice bonuses.

    Cons

Horrible work atmosphere. Very stuffy. Not a friendly place to work; negative attitudes, in general. Current staff lacks anything resembling a personality. There is no opportunity for advancement. Period.

    Advice to Management

Smile. Have fun. Lighten up. Too much time is spent at work to dread being there all day.

    Pros

Great people to work with and a nice working environment. Everyone (at all positions and locations) was knowledgeable at their jobs and willing to help with questions and advice. Chance to travel to different trade shows every year.

    Cons

Not a lot of time off. There is only a limited amount of time off you can earn and this time has to be shared between vacation, sick time off, and personal time off. Benefits are offered, but at a rate that is high at the high deductible level. No retirement benefits available.

    Advice to Management

Offering more time off or the chance to accumulate more time off would be nice. Retirement benefits would be great.

I have been working at Filmetrics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Filmetrics is a dynamic company with many avenues to grow and develop skills, participate in the evolution of a successful company, develop high-tech instruments serving many industries and earn great money. Employees are intelligent, diverse, driven and work very well together. Problem solving is a must at all levels. With offices scattered about the world, along with the combination of quality products and excellent customer service, the company’s growth is steady year in and year out. The industries using Filmetrics’ products and the consistent effort to be ahead of the technology curve makes for a very fun and challenging work day. Filmetrics is very fair, competitive and takes care of customers. The HQ office, located a few miles from beautiful Del Mar, has a manufacturing and an engineering building, is very open and bright, has a comfortable lounge, a game room and caters to collaboration. A consistent effort to become more “green” sets an example of environmental responsibility for others to follow. Stock options provide good incentive to work diligent. Healthcare is also offered. The technical tools to excel are at ones disposal. Overall, the day goes by fast, the money is good and communication is open an honest.

    Cons

PTO (Paid Time Off) could be improved by rewarding workers more time off based on how long employed with the company. Team building company events including family and/or friends could be more frequent and further build morale and camaraderie.

    Pros

The salary and benefits are solid, not amazing, but solid. All employees are intelligent, hard working, get along well, and treat each other with respect. The technology is somewhat dated but is still solid with good products that are easy to use. Loyal customers and stable financials.

    Cons

Leadership is non existent. Upper management (the owner/boss) is extremely intelligent, but also extremely difficult to work with. Upper management does not treat long nor short term employees no matter how loyal, with any respect. Expect to be belittled on a weekly basis with little to no recognition of any positive efforts. The boss has a deep seated mis-trust in all employees no matter how loyal they may be. There are countless unexplainable and unreasonable policies that have little to do with productivity but more with the boss's own personal comfort. Many large business decisions and expenses are also based not around the good of the company but around the boss's own personal comfort and ego. It does not seem that any employees who have stayed at the company for a length of time have had any significant career opportunities. Collaboration/communication between boss and employees is very poor. Any communication received is nearly impossible to decipher. Follow ups on communication usually result in little to no clarification. During the interview process, bonus's are made out to be phenomenal, when in fact they are quite poor considering the financial success of the company and extravagant and un-needed business purchases the boss makes.

    Advice to Management

The boss of the company is a good entrepreneur and did an excellent job navigating Filmetrics. Now that the company is established the boss's poor leadership and managerial qualities are stunting the potential for the company to grow and becomes more successful. A CEO with good leadership capabilities should be brought in to lead and grow the company.
