I worked at First Niagara Financial full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Amazing company to for. Provided great opportunities and covered tuition costs through Center for Financial Training. Gives back to local communities as well!

    Cons

Sometimes the branches get to busy for the number of tellers on the line. Inconsistencies between branches and rules could become stressful.

    Advice to Management

Have your computer system use photos- so when someone opens an account their picture will come up- tellers don't have to continually ask for IDA and customers don't have to get mad when they are asked eveyday.

    Pros

Excellent people no mater what branch you're at. Very competitive pay and a much more professional and knowledgable staff compared to other banks.

    Cons

Lofty sales goals, systems and software are a step behind the competitor.

    Advice to Management

Technology upgrade, more recognition and comfort for sales role positions. Hard to perform when you are worried about job security.

I have been working at First Niagara Financial full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Culture is great. People are helpful and friendly. Starting pay is decent. Bank holidays!

    Cons

Sometimes management doesn't communicate as well as they should. Don't expect a huge increase even if review is stellar unless you are in management.

    Advice to Management

Realize that the staff below management are the company's "legs". Without us, nothing would work or run smoothly. Not to say this is all of managment. Overall FN is a great place to work and feel appreciated.

    Cons

Pay/bonus and lack of careeer opportunities compared to other comparable banks is biggest downside.

    Advice to Management

Don't shortchange us. You'll start losing some of your best!

    Pros

The best reason for me to work at First Niagara Bank is the fact that I have 5 weeks vacation

    Cons

The management has a major problem with letting the employees know that they are appreciated.
    Except for a Chosen few.

    Advice to Management

Think of everybody when there are reviews, everyone needs more money not just a small percentage.

    Pros

They allow you to balance your work with your daily live, have a great benefit package, provide overtime at the time of merger which means extra money in our pockets.

    Cons

Sometimes the work load is too little for everyone to go thru the day, however when someone quits or gets fired they take a long time to get replaces and one time from 7 in a department we went down to 3 & the work load increased excessively as you may immagine, however they did nothing to hire someone to help.

    Advice to Management

It is important to treat everyone equally, even when you have differences with one or two employees, because it is greatly noticeable.

I worked at First Niagara Financial full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

IT is young and vibrant at FNFG. The people are friendly and supportive. Times are tight for everyone, but if you have a good idea, they will usually find a way to fund it.

    Cons

The other side of the "young and vibrant" coin is their inexperience. For an enterprise IT environment, it's still a pretty small organization and yet they want to be grown ups so bad, they tend to adopt unnecessary bureaucratic procedure just because that's what the big banks do.

    Advice to Management

Slow down growing the org chart, and focus on the people you already have. Say "no" to the lines of business when they want more work done than you have the people or experience to accomplish.
