I have been working at First Quality full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent starting pay and offers health insurance, though with high employee contributions. Great place to stay under the radar and collect a paycheck.

    Cons

Very poor bonus 401k contribution, long vesting period, no profit sharing, poor bonus structure, and non existent annual increases (1% or less). If hired you must start at the highest salary. And paid time off is two weeks and three personal days with no sick time. Poor and unsubstantiated strategic planning and critical thinking is sparse. Given there is little financial or personal incentive to do well, you are surrounded by sub par performers and management, particularly long term employees. Turn over is a problem and generally the under achievers remain. Beware of the HR department, just read the other reviews and interviews on Glassdoor. If you need more professional experience, FQ could be a solution. Just focus on self improvement and then move on. This place is a career dead end and is draining. No job is perfect, but this place is mind altering. My advice is to pay very close attention in the interview to illuminate these points. Unless you want to stay under the radar and collect paychecks.

    Advice to Management

Management does not listen, particularly at corporate. There are no employee surveys, no career planning and poor development resources. Goals are ambiguous and menial tasks aplenty. The company needs better analytics in both performance and human capital. Most roles should be redefined to make employees more accountable. Presently, senior and tenured employees do not perform and impede others that do. It may surprise management to know how many employees fall short due to the unwillingness of others.

I have been working at First Quality full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Ownership is very involved and understand the operations very well. They are extremely good in understanding there business. I have been very impressed how multiple generations of family is keeping it together. Business & technology Investment is best in the world. Great potential and growing company

    Cons

How much can ownership family do? Third level management is ineffective, bunch of yes men, with no vision, no creativity and no knowledge. Its worst in some areas than others. Benefits and growth is very limited.

    Advice to Management

Reduce Management layers, too many excel spreadsheet managers. FQ in the last 5 years have become too much bureaucratic and its loosing the culture which made it a success

I have been working at First Quality full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Decent pay, reliable bonus, and fair health benefits. However, HR cannot counted on to help with questions or concerns.

    Cons

HR is incompetent and will not follow up on any issues. They do not return phone calls or emails and will walk away mid conversation. Good luck with assistance on employee issues, recruitment or benefits. The corporate person recently hired is ruthless and will not respond to hello in the hallways. The manager of the department abuses her power and absolutely refuses to respond to email. She is extremely passive aggressive and will go out of her way to belittle or question and retaliate when pushed to do her job. Most of the time we have to go to corporate to have her respond to local employee issues. The list goes on. She puts company at legal risk.

    Advice to Management

Recognize there is a serious HR leadership problem and address. There are a few good employees in the department who are becoming corrupted by this poor and neglectful leadership.

I worked at First Quality full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Privately held - no pressure by Wall Street to focus on quarterly results or short term focus - focus on doing the right things.

    Cons

Owners still heavily involved in day-to-day running of program - leadership style is somewhat outdated as if running a much smaller company. Have not evolved leadership style to running a multi-billion dollar global company. Senior execs still have very little signing authority for approvals of spend/projects/etc. Results in long waiting time for ownership approvals.

    Advice to Management

Trust the senior leadership to be more autonomous. Relatively small spend amounts of 10's of thousands of dollars should not have to go to Ownership for approval. The mission, vision and values of the company are not talked about or shared to senior execs with the result that there isn't a shared list of objectives/behaviors/etc. that all functions can work towards. This is still kept very close to the Owners.

I worked at First Quality as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

This company really cares about grooming their interns. I was a Process Engineering intern at the King of Prussia branch, and it was a great experience.

    Pros:
    - Friendly, Open Work Environment
    - Clear Management/ Goals Structure
    - Not afraid to invest some $ upfront to improve employee knowledge
    - Very good pay (for an intern)
    - Very reasonable work hours (for intern and full time employees)

    Cons

Not many cons, except that as a process engineer, there is not much room for upper mobility career wise.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing.

I have been working at First Quality full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Owners ("ownership") have created a very special culture over the last 18+ years that is entrepreneurial and rewarding of collaboration and contribution, as a female they have been supportive of time off and special needs. They are generally interested in providing best product at best value. It used to be a no titles and collaborative, egalitarian culture.

    Cons

Over the last year new senior hire has began to erode the cultural fabric of the organization with "my way or the exit door" mentality and belittling language downward, and taking credit upwardly. Now there are way too many chiefs, not enough workers, as people have begun to leave as they see the new culture taking over.

    Advice to Management

    Read "The Emperor's New Clothes"

    Pros

Company is investing in IT to bring its systems up to date. Many diverse IT projects to work on. Recent hires at senior level of IT organization have good vision and bring good experience from larger enterprise organizations. Company is expanding.

    Cons

As a privately owned company, owner sign off requirement delay the procurement process. Office space for IT staff needs updating or relocation from current server room with no windows. Cafeteria food and facilities suck as the offices at the King of Prussia location share the building with manufacturing.

    Advice to Management

Update office space for IT staff. Delegate IT procurement approvals or streamline process.

I worked at First Quality full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Clean environment, promotes from within. Safety culture in place. No tolerance for bad attendance. Everyone seem friendly and they have an open door policy.

    Cons

Training is up in the air, they assign EMT's to lines just to watch what others do. Long hours of standing around waiting for the day to be over. If there is a bad storm and the Governor or Mayor declare a state of emergency, they expect you to come in, which contradicts their whole attitude about safety.

    Advice to Management

Pay in the area is higher. Be a bit more considerate of the safety of the employees outside of work.
