    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at FirstCaribbean Int'l Bank full-time

    Pros

Fair benefits package compared to other retail banks.

    Cons

Typical big company that does not walk the walk and talk the talk. Polices and procedures are not fully enforced or slectivley used to the banks advantage. Far far to many staffing issues which negatively impacts the customers but it would appear Canada is 100% fine with this approach.

    Advice to Management

Focus on learning and development of your people. Leaders have to lead and not be followers, they have to stand up for staff even if it is against regional HO in Barbados or Canada.

    Pros

    Great people.
Opportunities to move around are there.
They are good to people who show loyalty - especially if you've been around a while.

    Cons

You can easily get trapped in a role as the "local expert."
Management not as focused on people and culture as they should be.
    Understaffed in some areas.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at FirstCaribbean Int'l Bank full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Charges, staff rate on loans & credit cards. They offer good compensation & benefit packages including pension.

    Cons

Takes a long time for requested training & promotion. Most branches cannot give you the time to cross train because of lack of staff.

    Advice to Management

Hire more staff as their is very little balance between work & personal life.

I worked at FirstCaribbean Int'l Bank full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - opportunity for growth and development
    - diverse culture and environment due to multiple country approach to business
    - adequate investment in brand development

    Cons

    - lack of clarity in roles and responsibilities in some parts of the business
    - top-heavy executive team

    Advice to Management

While it is a complex business with criss-crossing layers of customer segment, country and legal company issues, clarity of purpose in roles and responsibilities would go a long way in empowering and focussing employees on company objectives and strategy.

    Pros

FirstCaribbean has some excellent benefits compared to other financial instituions. This helps to make up for the mediocre salary. Its a very nice, clean working environment with high ethical standards and caribbean pride. I enjoyed working there.

    Cons

Top management changes too often; Pay too minimal compared to the market; Too slow when making changes to match or beat competitors.

    Advice to Management

The bank needs to be a litlle bit more competitive in its market. More advertising would help to put Firstcaribbean in a better spot.

    Pros

Staff are friendly and provide advice.

    Cons

Senior executive team are way out of their depth and do not have a clue about running a bank like this.

Senior guys are complete bullies and cannot be trusted.

There appears to be a complete lack of an articulated strategy.

    Advice to Management

Start by changing the executive team. Top people have demonstrated a complete inability to successfully operate a company like this. Next, consider looking for a venture-partner to obtain some expertise in bank management, or probably better yet, sell the franchise and move back to Canada where the presence of an oligopoly will help.
