I have been working at FirstEnergy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Challenging work environment, with excellent resources and a very encouraging team atmosphere. Employee pay is very good, and seems to be very competitive to the industry. Also benefits are great (despite what older employees might claim as they had even better benefits at one point).

    Cons

Most of the positions are high stress positions, that require excellent attention to detail and an understanding of complex subject matter. Due to the nature of the work, many job responsibilities or tools are in constant flux. The electric system itself is very dynamic and it requires people in the power industry to be very excellent at dynamic problem solving.

    Advice to Management

My advice would be that management should take more advice from employees performing essential job functions when considering upgrades to tools or systems.

Operator input on transmission projects in planning for instance, would go a long way to help address the disconnect that sometimes exist between design practicality and necessity.

Overall, this "open to suggestions" culture has been really excellent with regards to safety culture. It could be another strong benefit that will ultimately improve performance of the system and employee morale. My experience with management at FE has always been positive and that's really the only suggestion I have.

I have been working at FirstEnergy as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work-Life balance is good. People around you are willing to guide and help you. Most people at the company have been in the industry for 10 years or more so their experience is great to learn from.

    Cons

Because FirstEnergy has so many subsidiaries, working at the child companies can be tough. Not as many opportunities as corporate. Ancient industry so younger employees are hard to come by.

    Advice to Management

    Reward employees based on merit.

I worked at FirstEnergy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It is a large company with a diverse set of job requirements and locations allowing for the ability to pursue different work experiences and settings, expand knowledge and experience base.

    Cons

Outside of Merger events, the company has been shrinking (along with most similarly positioned enterprises) for the last forty years. Frequent shifts in business emphasis and goals have made it very difficult to ever feel secure in almost any position.

    Advice to Management

Pursue areas of opportunity beyond what you view as your core competencies, or continue to oversee an ever-diminishing company.

I have been working at FirstEnergy (Less than a year)

    Pros

I really enjoyed working at FirstEnergy. For being in located in NE Ohio they offer great pay and solid benefits. The IT department is forward thinking and organized. Management seems to value a strong technical culture.

    Cons

As an energy company there is great opportunity in the next few years but it seems like FirstEnergy is not keeping up with renewable energy research and production-- start doing this.

    Advice to Management

    Continue making employees feel valued.

I worked at FirstEnergy as an intern

    Pros

-Gave me a great visibility of what the top companies in business deal with purchasing
-Ability to learn SAP and very standardized process skills that can be transferred to other positions
    -Great resume builder!
-Lots of other interns that are really fun and great intern events! HR works well with the interns.

    Cons

-Management and coach provides little guidance to your performance and is non-confrontational so I got little feedback to help myself improve
-I was told in my interview that I would rarely be doing data input.. that's all I ever did. So, there's a lack of honesty about the job description.
-I was not seen as valuable to the company. My projects always got delayed farther and farther until it was too late to even start.
-I was stuck in a corner all day and barely given any responsibility. I asked for more but was always ignored. Only take the job as a last option.
-Condescending management. I sat next to their office and laughed about how I didn't know how to do something I never learned. Being an intern is about learning, not mocking the fact that we don't know much.

    Advice to Management

-Create more inclusive environment for interns
    -Give clear and constructive feedback
-Follow development program that is laid out
-Allow for mistakes but also give opportunities to learn from challenges
