I have been working at FirstEnergy as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work-Life balance is good. People around you are willing to guide and help you. Most people at the company have been in the industry for 10 years or more so their experience is great to learn from.

    Cons

Because FirstEnergy has so many subsidiaries, working at the child companies can be tough. Not as many opportunities as corporate. Ancient industry so younger employees are hard to come by.

    Advice to Management

    Reward employees based on merit.

I worked at FirstEnergy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It is a large company with a diverse set of job requirements and locations allowing for the ability to pursue different work experiences and settings, expand knowledge and experience base.

    Cons

Outside of Merger events, the company has been shrinking (along with most similarly positioned enterprises) for the last forty years. Frequent shifts in business emphasis and goals have made it very difficult to ever feel secure in almost any position.

    Advice to Management

Pursue areas of opportunity beyond what you view as your core competencies, or continue to oversee an ever-diminishing company.

I have been working at FirstEnergy full-time

    Pros

Overtime is fairly plentiful as long as you like being forced to work it. And it always seems to come at inconvenient times.

    Cons

Management is severely lacking in professionalism and experience. Almost no job structure. They want everyone to perform any craft at any time. Sometimes u can't take an iron worker and make them an electrician in 15 min.

    Advice to Management

Classify work accordingly. Do not pretend every job is an emergency. Get technical support that can communicate and supply relevant information.

I have been working at FirstEnergy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Money is good, benefits are decent, don't usually work to hard.

    Cons

Forced overtime, meaningless policies and procedures, not much work life balance, Non-union, management and supervision can do as they please.

    Advice to Management

Keep an eye on the core mission, justifying your salary by creating useless and obsurd policy and procedures to make up for the mistakes of perhaps two percent of the Officers only serves to lower the moral of the section.

I worked at FirstEnergy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great pay and plenty of opportunity to earn even more if you do not mind working a ton of overtime

    Cons

No work life balance, forced overtime, very bad management. Seemed like they changed the ridiculous rules every two weeks

    Advice to Management

They need to start valuing their employees more and stop taking themselves so seriously. Management acted like employees were peasants who should bow down and thank them for letting them keep their jobs every day.

I have been working at FirstEnergy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Stable employment. It appears very hard to be fired. You can be incompetent at your job, but as long as you are good at filling out paperwork, you can't be fired.

    Cons

They do not reward high achievement. Even if your supervisor recommends you for promotion, the manager/director will simply look at your years of service, without regard to capabilities or achievement.

    Advice to Management

Give a better path to employees looking to excel. Give them a hope of promotion, or some concrete recognition for hard work and achievement, one not simply predicated on years in service.

I have been working at FirstEnergy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Overwhelmingly dedicated, self-motivated employees who approach work with a common-sense attitude and a general willingness to work as a team to accomplish the many tasks set before them.

    Cons

The endless, joyless pace of operations at a generating facility coupled with the organization's inertia resisting meaningful change detracts mightily from the work environment.

    Advice to Management

Set a vision beyond the mission statement for generating facilities: safe, reliable, cost-effective operations. It's OK to benchmark best practices wherever they are found, even if it's not a utility.
