I worked at FirstMerit full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It was fairly easy to get the job. HR is easy to work with. Some managers are understanding, while others are not.

    Cons

Sales numbers can be manipulated by bankers so their incentive pay is higher. Does not seem like FirstMerit is fair to their employees or cares about their employees at all. Always short staffed in the branches.

    Pros

You learn banking experience from training

    Cons

Favoritism, No diversity among coworkers, if you are a CC1 you day can be very boring

    Advice to Management

Stop favoritism within the branches, stop packing overloads on Tellers then the turnover would be better

I have been working at FirstMerit full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The paycheck comes on time consistently.

    Cons

Processes are antiquated and bogged down with redundancy. There's no contingency planning for call offs, vacations, resignations, or anything else that may create a staffing shortage. Organizational efficiency is a joke. At times, it seems like everything is being held together with bubble gum. You're only allowed to have an opinion if it's the right opinion. If you don't just "go with the grain," you're putting a target on your back. And if that's not enough, it's blatantly obvious that management just doesn't care about their people in the branches...

    Advice to Management

Consider investing into your employees and focus on them a little bit more than the bottom line. If you take care of your people, they'll take care of your customers. If your customers are taken care of, they'll take care of you. It all goes hand in hand and it's clear this ideology has long been forgotten. Also, it would help if you gave your people the tools needed to meet your expectations. Your systems and your server are severely insufficient to do anything timely, and your information management systems are garbage. Hope you guys look good in green...

    Pros

They make money and are growing. If you are looking for your first or second job in IT, this is a great place to learn a few things for a year or maybe 2 while everything is being rebuilt.

    Cons

No work life balance, abusive management style, very poor culture. No respect for workers, management does not take responsibility for their mistakes, constantly changing rules and tasks.

    Advice to Management

All the surveys in the world will not matter, you know where the issues are and should have addressed them long ago.

I worked at FirstMerit full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay was semi decent, officers that guarded the bank were cool. Some customers were cool

    Cons

Management style, difficult workers, workload was excessive, banker was a creeper

    Advice to Management

One teller posted $4000 of cash on her personal Instagram account, the other teller was not very nice. She was very rude and stuck up to others and she was more interested in shopping than working and the 2nd banker propositioned each of the tellers. The immediate supervisor knew about all these thing and did nothing about it.

    I worked at FirstMerit full-time

    Pros

Citizens had a great culture- very forgiving, very understanding and easy to talk to management. They were a people process orientated business as well as customer driven. It's hard to have both so if you can find a balance then great!

    Cons

After FirstMerit bought out Citizens, the culture changed to a more negative environment. There are so many unhappy people that think they will get blamed for something or think they aren't doing a good job because they never get complimented or credit on their work. Too many managers with not enough experience. They decide to dump the more experienced people for less experienced people.

    Advice to Management

Need to understand all your employees better. See things from their eyes first. Most employees want to do a good job so treat them with respect and they will treat you with respect back!

I worked at FirstMerit full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They just remodeled the buildings in Akron. The buildings are now a bit nicer. Once a year they give small employee appreciation gifts. That's really about it.

    Cons

They say they want diversity hire from within but go outside to get talent. This wouldn't be a problem I weren't qualified for the position I posted for.

    Advice to Management

    Practice what you preach.
