  1. "Fiskars - great place to work if you can negotiate the right salary!"

I have been working at Fiskars full-time

    Pros

Great corporation in all, brand new building. Everything about Fiskars is great except their salary levels.

    Cons

Salary levels are outdated and not with the current market. Make sure to investigate your worth before agreeing to a certain salary. Once you're in, it's like pulling teeth getting a raise unless you do something incredibly outstanding or have been there long enough.

    Advice to Management

Review again salary markets for positions and realize that the cost of housing in Madison is insanely high and driving salaries up.

  2. "Blech. High pay and a pretty building can't cover up this soul-crushing employment experience."

I worked at Fiskars full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay, benefits and work/life balance are decent, iconic brand, mostly good people. I hear the coffee machines are pretty good and I guess the location is nice.

    Cons

Too many to list. Favoritism, lack of career advancement opps, tattletale mentality encouraged by senior management, non-progressive, awful HR team. Ego-driven leadership team are good old boy micromanagers with old-school ways of thinking and awful interpersonal skills. Focused more on how things are done then the results delivered.

    Advice to Management

Leave please. Let some fresh new thinkers come in and propel this company into the 21st century!

I have been working at Fiskars full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some truly great people work here. The building could be one of the nicest in Wisconsin. Work/life balance is great (meaning that no one works very hard nor do they stay late). Some really good products and a dedication to innovate.

    Cons

It's a culture of fear. Don't expect to make any difference here. Passive aggressive behavior is rampant. Tattling, gossip and back stabbing is the name of the game. This should be the best place to work in Madison, instead, a part of me dies every time I come in. All of this starts with the 'leadership team'. They foster this terrible environment with their poor communication and constant rivalries. It's probably a decent place to be if you are entry level or early in your career, but if you are an experienced 'middle manager' you will hate it here. Walk on egg shells, nod your head yes to everything, and don't ever disagree with anyone and maybe you'll survive.

    Advice to Management

Work together and focus on the things that matter. Trust your people. Don't think you have to be involved in every single little decision.

I have been working at Fiskars full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly people, great high-quality products, employee discount on products is generous, good work/life/balance. The new building is nice, as well as the onsite gym.

    Cons

Micro-Management at all levels, especially in marketing. Some managers are downright petty/jealous and will try to sabotage your career. Favoritism rampant and lack of career advancement.

    Advice to Management

    Clean up your marketing team.

I have been working at Fiskars full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most of the people that work for Fiskars are hard-working, intelligent, and all-around awesome people. The products are also truly amazing.

    Cons

There is currently a global re-organization happening that is turning the company into a political quagmire. Mid to High-level management is too busy worrying about keeping their jobs or who will be promoted when to keep the company moving forward. There is a sentiment to not cooperate globally, creating a horrible working environment. I've worked for this company for a few years and this is the most divisive work environment I've seen yet.

    Advice to Management

Stop caring so much about global vs. local. Realize your employees just want to do amazing work and your political baggage is getting in the way. Invest in your people and be open to the change so we can be a part of the conversation.

I have been working at Fiskars full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Really fun people work here, if you can escape enough of the office politics. Fiskars tools are really good, and the employee discount is excellent.

    Cons

Middle to upper management is so concerned with being let go that they micromanage everything. There is almost no hope of advancing unless one of the leadership team really likes you, but middle management makes sure you get almost no face-time with any of the upper management. Management says they want to improve and have an open door policy, however, in practice this is not the case.

    Advice to Management

Hire some young people, people of color, people who don't have the exact same background as you. There's little to no diversity and the company needs it. Pay your employees more and invest in their training. People will work harder for you, stay longer, and tell their friends if you do. Offer the same benefits to your American employees that the Finnish office workers have, because it's the right thing to do and the publicity you would get would be beneficial for the company you say you want to build. Make the company culture and values (you write and preach about) your actual practices.

I worked at Fiskars full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay was OK. Medical Benefits were good. Fellow employees, the "lifers," were what made it fun to work there. The discounts on Gerber and Fiskars products were decent as well.

    Cons

Forcing your CUSTOMER SERVICE workers to perform time wasting "PROJECTS" along with their duties is a stupid idea and I'm glad they laid me off. Projects are for engineers and management , NOT hourly customer agents.

I should have been eligible for FMLA due to pain issues but they "laid me off" instead. Again, glad they did. I took the severance and ran.
    So foolish.

    Advice to Management

Don't tell your small groups that they will have a say in hiring/firing decisions then unilaterally make (inevitably) wrong, uninformed decisions on your own. Not trusting management affects morale. Go figure.

    Pros

Great portfolio of products in categories with passionate consumers. Overall great people to work with and a fun environment. Company supports community efforts

    Cons

U.S. Leadership team micro-manages severely and is an old boys club. There has never been a female on the leadership team. Finland leadership is much more progressive.

I worked at Fiskars full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good products but too expensive for most. Some nice folks.

    Cons

Micromanaging at all levels. Favoritism is rampant. Inter-department rivalries. Poor communication. Lots of turnover. Consistently re-evaluating processes and changing processes, and everything is a process. Slow to react. Slow to make decisions. It's the definition of survival of the fittest. Speaks about core values at every turn, but just doesn't live up to them in the real world.
