I worked at Five Star Senior Living full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The resident are great! Coworkers were great too.

    Cons

Health plan not so great. Bonus for managers were poor. It was like a revolving door for managers at my facility. Front line not paid enough to retain. Especially in dining room.

    Advice to Management

Try to retain regional engineers. I was on my 4th in 5 years when I left.

I worked at Five Star Senior Living full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Not hard work when residents are appropriate and meet state regulations . Fun work environment now that the Lifestyle coordinator is acting Interim ED. Residents are wonderful

    Cons

Residents that don’t meet State regs but remain in building on hospice and:or listed as aging in place - which people take way out of context. If you can evaluate them in the allotted time then they need to go to a higher level of care. It’s NOT safe for them to be there any longer!!!

    Advice to Management

Increase the pay for all positions, offer shift diffs and you will be shocked at how the turn over and call off rates decline rapidly!!!!!!

I worked at Five Star Senior Living full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendships with fellow employees and satisfaction in serving the elderly.

    Cons

    1. Current company situation is similar to Cuba. Due to depreciation on buildings, equipment, and vehicles not being funded, upgrades and replacements are difficult to non-existent. Worn carpet is held together with duct tape. Furniture is falling apart. Vehicles are worn out.
    2. Company stock is selling at 50% less than a year ago. You could not buy a small soft drink for the price of one share!
    3. "Fire sales" are being held by drastically slashing rates.
    4. Top executives (VP's, etc) micro-manage EVERYTHING!
    5. Residents are unhappy.
    6. Vendors are upset due to their bills not being paid timely.
    7. Wages and benefits are non-competitive and not conducive in recruiting and retaining good people.

    Advice to Management

Sell the company or file Chapter 11.
