The team works hard and are friendly.
Residents are really sweet and just want someone to talk to.
    They have good insurance plans.

Hard work and dedication not really recognized.

Suggestion are sometimes overlooked when asked for.

    Advice to Management

If your there and a resident needs help and you see me helping someone else, help the resident. Don't call me. I'm getting to everyone as fast as I can.

I have been working at Five Star Senior Living part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They have good insurance and benefits if your full time. Staff ratios are usually reasonable. Good place for a new grad nurse to learn if you don't mind low pay.

    Cons

Only give up to 2% raise. HR is never around and doesn't respond to your concerns. Management doesn't do anything about bullying or drama between departments.

    Advice to Management

Be more competitive with wages, especially for nurses, then maybe there won't be such a high turnover rate.

I worked at Five Star Senior Living full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Comfortable and well maintained community. Wonderful residents.

    Cons

Management had obvious double-standards and their own agendas. There was never a cohesive team, only clicks. Hard work, dedication, and loyalty were rarely recognized.

    Advice to Management

Recognize what makes an employee successful and allow that person to use their strengths and skills to enhance their position and be a strong addition to a team. When an employee feels under utilized and prohibited from performing to their full potential, this can create underlying frustration and resentment.

    Pros

Management will give you all of the tools to do your job. Great opportunities to promote from within.

    Cons

Not as big as several of the Corporate run Senior Living communities but has a little of the same cookie cutter corporate "feeling" policies.

I have been working at Five Star Senior Living full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Flexible Hours
    Great Team Work
    Great Nurses/CNA's
Lots of people who really care.

    Cons

    Undervalued
    Insulting Low Pay
Overbearing Management; Lots of demands & NO HELP!
Undermining management, States the rules then leaves you high and dry when it comes to enforcing them.

    Advice to Management

Help a resident! Don't come find me and demand I help the loudest person on the unit when I'm knee deep in poop (I can hear that they need me! I'm working on it!) Last I checked you are just as capable as getting someone a glass of water, or even a spoon as I am. If you have a problem with another department go talk to them, not me.

    Pros

The culture and the environment are the best I have ever been in. Five Star offers the amazing opportunity to work with extremely bright people! You get the unique opportunity to progress and your work is truly valued. Very collaborative work environment, Five Star values work-life balance, a great place to work! Located right off the Mass Pike, underground parking, bagel Fridays and many other great perks! Would highly recommend!

    Cons

    No cons to speak of!

    Advice to Management

Please keep up the good work!

I worked at Five Star Senior Living full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Reviewing all the comments there are a few things that seem to be frequently mentioned:
    1) The residents are wonderful people
    2) Staff tries hard but the strain is evident
    3) Nice working conditions/environment

    Cons

Please notice all the glowing reviews that frequently come following a negative review. Now notice that so many of them come from 1) Newton, MA -the headquarters; 2) Recruiters - say isn't that a conflict of interest?; 3) People who have little knowledge/experience in patient care.
Now think about how all these "fluff reviews" skew the overall averages toward 5. Even with all these reviews 5 Star can barely get above a 3.
Face it, medical jobs at 5 Star is a grist mill. High turnover, lots of pressure to be efficient even when the job itself is set up to be inefficient, requests for billing that are difficult to justify, signing out when "not working" but expected to "work" even when hourly not salaried employees.

    Advice to Management

Face it Bruce, the Senior Living portion of 5 Star is probably very well run and the communities (IL/AL) pleasant enough experiences. However, when one considers the healthcare side, it's another story altogether. It's a well-paying job in many cases but your soul is worth a lot more.
I mean anyone who understands Medicare gets this. Reimbursement rates are so low the profit margin is incredibly thin. You need a new paradigm here Bruce and either you're not aware of it (and that's bad) or you are and you don't care (which is infinitely worse). Invest in technology to improve efficiency. Invest in well trained and educated people to facilitate the process even though they may not directly bring in revenue. But, as long as the slaves keep rowing, the captain will still go water-skiing I guess. Cheers!
