I worked at Fletcher Building full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Large international organisation with huge diversity.
Lots of good people and lots of good business units within Fletcher Building.

    Cons

The previous CEO bought short term gains at the expense of long term pain.
Many restructures, job losses, costs cut etc. This is all coming home to haunt Fletcher Building now through:
         Loss of knowledge and experience.
         Collapse of workflows.
         Lack of structure

    Advice to Management

No more restructures, no more cost cutting.
    Consolidate and rebuild.

I have been working at Fletcher Building full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent vision for the group as a whole and a huge opportunity to leverage the wider business to realise success.
Incredible career opportunities and if you apply yourself the sky is the limit, but its certainly not a company you could cruise along taking it easy.
    Good benefits and competitive salaries.

    Cons

Its a sink or swim environment, don't expect to have your hand held.
As its such a large machine it's often hard to make your voice heard.

    Advice to Management

Stay the course, stick to the vision laid out for the business and ignore the complaints coming from various business units. Don't let those stuck in the past keep the business from moving forwards.
Do more for the sense of community in the business, so far it is non existent. Penrose campus feels like a building full of strangers.

I worked at Fletcher Building part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great aspirations around business transformation. Many really great people working all through the organisation and committed to what they do. Fair REM and flexible working policies.

    Cons

Hard aspects to the transformation including knowledge how much should go to the corporate centre versus leaving accountability in the business. Great aspects to the old culture and family values but also lack of performance focus that leaders are trying to shift.

    Advice to Management

Try to maintain balance between loading up the corporate centre and maintaining accountability in the business units. Think carefully about what is best to sit out in the business and what can be generic in the centre

I have been working at Fletcher Building full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The new leadership team has real commitment, our new GM is a good man who has brought a clear vision, drive, open inclusive environment, employee and customer focus and positive change is happening.

    Cons

At Fletcher building we have clear silos. People are good in both sides of the fence, though the fence needs to be removed to get more things done, the good intent is there, alignment and one team mentality will help

    Advice to Management

Corporate, executives and leadership team need to increase support to shared services, remove silos to create common practices.
Keep promoting the values we have through examples everyday, we have good people in shared services, give them more recognition.

I have been working at Fletcher Building full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - lots of work to do if you like a busy and challenging environment
    - good people
    - the diversity and scale of the portfolio is massive
    - lots of opportunities to improve

    Cons

    - not as agile as a small business, very complex
    - the old mentality needs to go, embrace and drive change
    - will be good to see more recognition of staff that are working hard
    - politics

    Advice to Management

A lot of good people in this business but management has not been consistent in recognising these people. You need to wake up and start recognising them. I've seen some terrible decisions over the last 12 months in promoting the wrong people.

I worked at Fletcher Building full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    DECRA brand
    Local Decra managers and ceo
    Manufacturing excellence team
    Sales people

    Cons

The roof corporate group especially the human resource department.
They just moved to one of the most expensive areas in one of the most expensive buildings.

    Advice to Management

The US leaders of DECRA are the ones who instruct us, train us and inspire us. We hate these Irvine guys and our leaders don't need them. I hear rumors of our head of sales and our president getting ready to leave. The president helped me find a job as soon as he heard I needed to move for my wife's job. He's a good guy. He's paid for people's college from his own bank account and treats us all with the same respect. So does sales Vice President and most of the OPEx group.
Patricia in hr is nice and helpful.

I worked at Fletcher Building full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    High profile NZ business
    Some pockets of great people
    Good benefits and study options

    Cons

You need to learn about 7 different systems just to do your job.
Information comes at you from too many forums and angles.
Have cellphone? You have to be MARRIED to that thing.
Constant pressure to cut headcount in business units that are already suffering from staff that are over-stretched. "Do more with less" is the catch-cry.
HR are the worst at following the standards and processes they demand of the rest of the business
The ethics of stitching up the market in a way that competitors can't compete is a large part of the reason the cost of building in NZ is ridiculously high. Well known in the industry as the 'mafia'.

    Advice to Management

Shareholder value has to come from somewhere else. Stop asking for less people until everyone breaks.
Look at the information overload....it's like swimming against a river dam on release. there's only so many hours in the day to do the job you're hired to do...let alone read/contribute to the inhouse social media 'yammer', read the website, and log in/utitlise all the various systems you need to do your job. It wreaks havoc on your concentration/focus.

I worked at Fletcher Building (More than a year)

    Pros

Some great businesses, well-led; strong commercial focus and a big ambition; some excellent development programmes for leaders; a focus on some great community efforts - particularly youth employment

    Cons

    Some dysfunction in the senior leadership team; some mismatch between espoused values and the reality of behaviours;

I worked at Fletcher Building full-time

    Pros

It has a very easy going and relaxed office environment. You are allowed to do your job with minimal supervision. Staff are very friendly.

    Cons

Sometimes the upper management is to hands off in areas they shouldn't be, poor communication from upper management to staff, this is slowly changing however.

    Advice to Management

Talk to staff more regularly about where the business is going and how it is doing in the market. Remind staff about courses available through the company.
