Great in so many ways but just doesn't pay enough...
May 25, 2015 - Teacher/Former Travel Agent in AdelaideRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great company/store culture. Great training and opportunity to advance. Excellent support structure. Great opportunities to travel, often/sometimes as a reward for your work. Great earning potential 'if' you stay long enough to build up a core group of clientele who purchase decent size holiday packages, with enough inclusions often enough or 'if' you happen to be lucky enough to work in a store that sees the sort of customer just described often enough.
Cons
The average consultant works way too hard for the pay they receive. Just looking at the salaries stated on this site, you get a fair idea. It's not an easy job and it requires a lot of skill and long hours to do well. $30,000-$40,000 for this just isn't enough. There have been some very tedious sales programs/requirements in place that just get in the way of doing your job well.

Pros
--- Uncapped earning. --- Stylish and low-maintainance uniform. --- Discounted travel. --- Young energetic crowd and fun parties.
Cons
--- Workplace bullying issues are swept under the rug. --- Long working hours and mandatory after-work functions that can go until late at night. --- Bad business ethic due to the pressure of the unrealistic targets. It made me feel sick. --- If you don't make the unrealistic and incredibly high sales quotas, you will be made to feel like a failure. In my case, my Team Leader made an error whilst training me in my second week. Six months later, when they discovered that the example booking we were working on had not been cancelled by my Team Leader, who had since left, they pinned the damages of many thousands of dollars on me. I had to work it back through my commission. They watched me for four months work beyond my limit, take on the stress of not only attempting to meet my already high sales-targets but the additional 25% in sales per month in order to pay this mistake off. I came close to achieving this - a personal feat, but for the wrong reasons - and absolutley crumbled in the process. No support, encouragement or recognition of my efforts were offered. I left the company feeling inadequite, low in confidence, stressed out and depressed. It took years and the help of career counsillor to get over.

Pros
Social gatherings with unlimited alcoholic drinks. "Discounted" trips.
Cons
This is a true sales job. You need to be vicious and willing to take a lot of hard earned money off of people. Be ready to see your commission disappear after credit card fees, ticketing fees, etc is taken away from you. This is no way to make a living. Base salary is a joke. You make more money working Tim Hortons. You are rewarded with a tiny percentage of the commission you make. While the company takes majority. You always work long hours but in return the pay cheque does not amount to your hard work. There is no work / life balance.

Pros
Great culture, good training program, lots of fun events if you're into getting drunk.
Cons
They do warn you that it will be hard work and long hours and that it takes a year to get anywhere. It is good training if you want to build a career in travel, and if so you better hope you get a good team leader who helps and supports you. A lot of responsibility lies on your shoulders and your screw ups come out of your pay. You get paid min wage for 38 hours but work a min of 46 hours per week plus extra events that you are expected to attend. They push you for sales and I just think the work and responsibility outweighs the pay ridiculously. Rich company but check out customer reviews online and you will see a he'll of a lot of ppl are not happy.

Ever day is different, we have the pleasure of helping plan people's holidays. So many amazing places in this big wide world, you never stop learning.
Cons
You cannot turn the enquiry on and off. You can work some long hours and you sometimes have to deal with some very challenging customers.

Some of the people were great. I learnt some great secrets to carry on booking my own travel mysef
Cons
- long hours worked and we were expected to charge the customer exorbitant mark ups to cover those costs - commission structure seems set up like an MLM (it all just flows up line) - drug and alcohol fueled blowout parties aren’t everyone’s idea of “culture” - suffered a personal tragedy and was made to feel like I was nothing but a financial burden because there was cancelled travel and loss of commission as a result of said tragedy. Nobody even asked if I was ok - your tactics and manipulation during the voting of the agreement were borderline illegal (are you aware you’re not allowed to ask in a room full of people who is in a union). - had MULTIPLE reach out after I’d left telling me they’d been made redundant and then THE NEXT DSY had their redundancies withdrawn and your response was literally “we’re going to pretend the last 24 hours didn’t happen”

Fun but mostly stressful
Aug 22, 2016 - Travel Consultant in Toronto, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
You work with some truly amazing and passionate people. It can be a really fun place to work with some travel perks. Made some really good friends.
Cons
Hard to be a high performer/ hit your targets unless you mark up prices and do dodgey things. You sell your soul a bit every time you do unethical things to make money. Most of which you won't see on your pay check. Big drinking culture which can be really fun starting out! But you work long hours under a lot of stress and start using alcohol as a crutch at sponsored open bar events. When you do ask for help (ie. a drinking problem) you are given a toll free number which you make an appointment to sit down with a cheap crappy therapist who refers you to free websites. The overtime hours are unpaid and the salary and commissions are fairly low. I was working 60+ hour weeks with no lieu time in exchange for the overtime. Instead my manager would tell me I was bad at time management until I just believed it and accepted the long hours. Big manipulation tactics from management. Used to have amazing conferences sponsored by flight centre but have been cancelled due to cutbacks. Management still has conferences but don't bring any tools, tricks, excersizes or motivation back to teams. New senior management cares more about profit then culture and philosophies company was built on.

Work Hard, Play Harder
Sep 14, 2019 - Assistant Manager in RockinghamRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
If your a natural sales person who enjoys fast paced and competitive workplaces then this is your perfect job. Its hard work and at times extremely long hours but if you put in the effort the incentives are incredible. Weekly in store drinks, monthly awards nights with meals and drinks, annual balls and global awards..... and the opportunity to travel the world!
Cons
Base Salary is minimal. Commission structure is harsh so a slow month you wouldn't make enough to pay the mortgage but a great month can bring home 10k easy
