I have been working at Flint Hills Resources full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Market-based management culture is at the heart of all we do

    - Change and transformation are more than buzzwords

    - Being a part of a larger family of companies is a huge benefit

    Cons

    - Very traditional work environment with little opportunity for a flexible work schedule, especially at the corporate office. This is an area where the company recognizes they are behind and are examining options for a more competitive work/life balance for employees to better align with other companies.

I have been working at Flint Hills Resources full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great working environment, work relationships, and a company safety record. For me, the focus on safety (walk the walk) is the greatest company asset. They also value mutual respect of employees.

    Cons

Salary and bonus do not keep up with market.

    Pros

Good place to gain experience and try different things.

    Cons

    Constantly reorganizing.
Upper end positions are constantly changing.
MBM teaching revolves around creative destruction which means roles are constantly changing and most positions are not expected to last more then a few years.
Focus is bottom line short term profits.
Big egos but that is a result of MBM where you constantly are expected to show financially why your position is important and makes money for the organization.

I have been working at Flint Hills Resources full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I am proud of my company and coworkers. That is hard to find! Commitment to integrity and compliance without compromise is also hard to find and is at the core of what we do daily. The company has solid principles that guide daily activities.

    Cons

The one downside that I see is lack of flexibility of work schedule. Working remotely isn't yet an option and start times are rigid, which can make balancing the rest of life difficult.

    Advice to Management

Flexibility in non schedule critical roles would be a valuable benefit to all employees and it can come with no cost to the company.

I worked at Flint Hills Resources full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

MBM is a good Operating Philosophy. 0-5 Year Folks can get a lot of responsibility and experience but you need to find a good mentor. Experienced folks should stay away due to abusively long hours due to understaffing and high turnover. No work rationalization process (poor functional management).

    Cons

MBM can appear to be a cult without more definition and consistent application. Budgets, Structure, and Standards have their place if applied correctly. Letting everybody do their own thing is more like chaos than freedom.

Koch is struggling every place except Petro-Refining (High Margin) and Georgia-Pacific. It struggles to earn an investment grade return in many acquired business units. That means meager staffing and long hours (many spent in meetings talking about other meetings).

    Advice to Management

Value Action and Results achieved the right way over excessive meetings and talking. Streamline Wichita.

Promote competent managers not just Koch Long-Term Employees. Talking in meetings and calling meetings is not a skill to be encouraged. Getting things done as a team is.
