I worked at Flint Hills Resources full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Genuinely nice people. Yearly salary is good depending on your position and if you can avoid working turnaround (turnaround incentive is non-existent for salaried employees). Lots of decision rights, even for new employees.

    Cons

Company leadership values acceptance of Koch principles and love of “Market Based Management” over any kind of technical competence. For a major US refinery, the percentage of leadership with little-to-no refining experience (or even engineering ability) is shocking.

The company suffers from an abundance of middle-managers who offer little value. The majority of the work is done by a few, overworked employees in each department. A strong culture of nepotism has developed over the years as new employees brought over from the same chemical chemical company are hired into management/upper level positions they are clearly not qualified for.

The turnaround structure needs to be completely overhauled for the process engineering department. There is zero incentive for a salaried engineer to work turnaround as bonuses are not guaranteed and compensation days cannot be taken at the employees discretion (compensation days much be taken immediately after turnaround).

    Advice to Management

Focus on promoting technically capable engineers with refinery experience to management positions. Improve turnaround compensation policy for salaried employees.

    Pros

KOCH hires really great people to work with.
The pay is very competitive and you would not find a better group of people to work with. KOCH prides itself on its people and as an employee I do feel valued. Since the company is privately held, the work force is more stable.

    Cons

Some of the technical aspects at KOCH are outsourced to other engineering firms meaning in-house engineering is not always there.
Kool-aid drinking on values - the principles are very sound and that's why the business is so successful, but sometimes trigger words come up in every meeting

    Pros

Leadership team that is truly commites to safety. There is also a tremendous focus on employee engagement, and you don't see that very often.

    Cons

It takes a lot to move the organization in a different direction. Most of that can be attributes to the sheer size of the workforce.

    Advice to Management

Continue to grow your internal talent. Focus on upgrading talent where you can. Continue looking for ways to build solid talent pools.

I have been working at Flint Hills Resources full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good medical and dental plan

    Cons

There's a level of management in FlintHills that's not good for the company's future, they have no vision to lead their employees with the principles prescribed by Koch although they hold others accountable by a cult like self interpretation of the MBM principles. Senior and mid-level management is very focused on moving up in the organization and has a low tolerance for and no desire to change. There's no drive to improve productivity and as long as you are 'nice' there's no need to produce any valuable work or perform. Silo structures with no systems and no order, very hard to figure out who works for who, where and how the company operates. So it's easy to ask the wrong question to the wrong person setting off a chain reaction of hostility and passive aggression. If you function well in a toxic environment you will excel without the need to be productive. Work excellence and challenge process is discouraged by an absent senior management that easily feels threatened backed by their HR manager in Wichita.

    Advice to Management

Don't hire from outside the company

    Pros

Tons of learning/challenging opportunities with a lot of knowledgeable people. Company is very open to working with your development and placement within the company. Thank you.

    Cons

Advancement opportunities within certain fields and locations. Some management with the "do it my way" attitude and not open to others possible changes.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees about complaints and concerns.

I worked at Flint Hills Resources (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay is excellent, the father company Koch's philosophy is awesome.

    Cons

The fore named company does not tend to adhere to that philosophy that well. The choices in department managers is very weak, they tend to put people in those positions that have little to no hands on experience so they tend to make decisions that don't work well for those doing the jobs

    Advice to Management

I would suggest the manegment group listen to and use that hands on experience that they have working for them.

    Pros

The normal "Joes" & the old timers are awesome to work with ...you know who you are.

    Cons

But around 2007, things started changing, & "corporate" took over. Greed, back stabbing, & the "I'm better than you" management game all came into play. Their philosophies were good.....but only the union people & "lower" people had to abide by them. Upper management seemed to get away with sweeping things under the carpet.

    Advice to Management

Get truthful. Get honest with yourself first. In your gut, you know right from wrong.
