I worked at Florida Aquarium part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Ticket sales earn commissions, good benefits (such as free or discounted admission to other organizations), friendly team

    Cons

Bad weather affects pay (no commissions if dolphin cruise is cancelled), limited full time positions available

    Advice to Management

Split commissions amongst all staff working per day that was everyone works as a team to make sales and Guest Sevice agents don't get the short end of the stick.

I worked at Florida Aquarium part-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - The aquarium is beautiful - Conservation message is taken seriously - Sometimes you'll get great people to work with - The job is fulfilling when I make a guest happy - Good working hours, convenient for those in school - If managers actually like you then its fun - HR never fires anyone so you have some job security

    Cons

    - Management plays favorites VERY badly. It's always personal, they never favor the employees who stand out, they favor the employees who will chime in on their bashing sessions or who they personally are close to. - HR is trash, they never get back to someone and will incriminate an employee without disciplining them. - One of the directors has a serious sexism problem. Always jokes around with male employees but seems to only call female employees out on doing something wrong. - Managers tend to joke, make rude comments, and talk about their employees with their favorite employees. Not professional whatsoever. - Management casually drops the F-Bomb in the office. When the door is open, we can hear you, so can guests. - Employees form cliques, especially full-time staff. - Fake teamwork attitude. The management is very nice to new employees, but you become very invaluable the second you've been there longer than three months (90 days). (i.e., no respect, no gratitude, taken as a joke) - If you do what you are supposed to, but maybe not go above and beyond, you're a bad employee. - You cannot say anything bad about management without them retaliating. Isn't that against policy? (the answer is yes) - Makes employees feel powerless, like they don't have a voice, and don't want to take advantage of the open-door-policy due to fear of retaliation, termination, or being considered a bad employee for an opinion. - There is a major fakeness about everyone in this department. No one seems to ACTUALLY care about their job or the institution. It's just a job to them. Maybe if employees and management cared about the guest experience and not the money we can make off of them, we wouldn't have so many guest complaints. - Low pay. Starts at 9.75 for very hectic work.

    Advice to Management

Take a couple of courses in management, if you haven't. It's valuable and maybe you'd stop having such a high turnover. Until you can learn to treat employees equally, fairly, and properly, you will never retain the good employees. Beneficial employees will always find a better option if there is one.

I have been working at Florida Aquarium full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The conservation message is shared with the public through education and entertainment. The Education and Husbandry team are passionate about what the do. They live the mission of protect and restore the blue planet. The volunteers are amazing!

    Cons

Unfortunately, the HR department is incompetent at best. They continually mess up and give excuses or try to blame the employee. Benefits have not been assigned correctly, salaries promised were not delivered and they play a game of favorites. They change your rate of pay after they hire you. They do not communicate well and they hide the fact that there are some serious wrong-doings going on. The telling factor is in how they treat the people leaving the company. I have witnessed punishments that they hand out to people and if they talk about these said punishments they will be fired. This is a terrible place for morale. We live in constant fear of being fired.

    Advice to Management

You need to operate in full transparency. Communication is lacking at best. You can't play favorites and try to protect people and punish others.

I have been working at Florida Aquarium part-time

    Pros

When you're scheduled in tickets, you get commission on everything you sell (except general admission tickets). The commission boosts your paycheck by almost $100 or more depending on how much you sell and how much you're actually scheduled.

    Cons

There's not much room for advancement and all benefits are strictly for full timers. There's other departments, but it's hard to get out of them without leaving the company.
