I worked at Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I loved my job and the hours. Co-workers were also a plus.

    Cons

The State likes to start everyone out as an "OPS" employee, meaning that they consider you part time. You will work 40 hours but you will not get any benefits at all. They will keep you OPS if you don't make an effort to apply for full time. Lastly, they will always give you a salary range for your position but I guarantee you, you will never see a pay raise ever, unless you advance into another position.

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge those who go above and beyond and pay accordingly.

Management does well with what they have to work with and the things that need fixing are beyond them and lay with the Governor (State Job)

I have been working at Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation full-time

    Pros

You will have normal working hours.
Your job will be pretty steady.
No one will require much of you.
You will have plenty of time to apply to other companies.
There is a retirement, but you will have to sell your soul for 30 years to reap the benefits.

    Cons

It's incredibly boring. There are several departments at DBPR so I can't speak for all of them, but while speaking with others and observing the general attitudes, it's easy to see that it's not just my department that resembles the walking dead. Work comes in, work goes out. There is nothing challenging or exciting happening. You are also located in a building that resembles an abandoned mental hospital with pink bathrooms and very white walls. The most exciting part of your day will be when the elevators or the bathrooms stop working.

    Advice to Management

Let's be honest, state work isn't exciting, but don't let your employees rot away at their desks. Upgrade your technology. Be involved in the building remodel. Make common or break rooms. Put some damn color on the walls.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working independently and with a flexible schedule, good benefits, company car or paid mileage. Paid sick and vacation leave is earned by hours worked.

    Cons

You don't get a raise unless a cost of living increase is voted in or you get a promotion. Micromanaged. Technology is far behind the times. Hypocrisy is rampant. Upper management in Tallahassee does not care about employee happiness or job satisfaction. Lowest paid health inspectors in the USA.

    Advice to Management

Get employees more money of lower standards. Inspectors are being paid to do the minimum considering they are the lowest paid health inspectors in the country. Pay people right or stop expecting perfection while lying to employees and pretending to care about getting them more money.
