I worked at Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Being part of something larger than yourself. The things we do help people. This is priceless and helps keep you motivated.

    Cons

Not a lot of opportunities for advancement or raises. As a result we loose good people to private industry or other government agencies that pay more than the State of Florida.

    Advice to Management

I know it's hard asking the legislature for employee benefits each year, but don't give up, your employees are counting on you.

I have been working at Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working independently and with a flexible schedule, good benefits, company car or paid mileage. Paid sick and vacation leave is earned by hours worked.

    Cons

You don't get a raise unless a cost of living increase is voted in or you get a promotion. Micromanaged. Technology is far behind the times. Hypocrisy is rampant. Upper management in Tallahassee does not care about employee happiness or job satisfaction. Lowest paid health inspectors in the USA.

    Advice to Management

Get employees more money of lower standards. Inspectors are being paid to do the minimum considering they are the lowest paid health inspectors in the country. Pay people right or stop expecting perfection while lying to employees and pretending to care about getting them more money.

I worked at Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The general counsel's office is wonderful to work for as they provide many different opportunities to learn and grow. The health insurance for select exempt is incredible.

    Cons

Constant change of working for a State agency. You are never really ever set in any articular area. You have to be flexible with constant change.

    Advice to Management

Trust your employees more and when flex time is requested because of overtime working please grant it to them. Salary is not as high

I worked at Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very lax work environment. Great for a law student, able to get time off to study for finals and prep for school. A lot of law students work there making it an enjoyable (yet sometimes loud) place to work.

    Cons

The pay is low compared to private firms and the offices are located in an old stripmall, pay has also not been increased for over ten years.

    Advice to Management

Consider taking care of the roach problem. It is not great to always look up at the lights and see dead cockroaches sitting up there.

I have been working at Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Health benefits package is wonderful. Steady hours - no overtime allowed which is good if you have other things to do and family. You have to really screw up to get fired.

    Cons

No raises unless the legislature approves across the board. Recently went for 6 years without any increases. Poor morale because of this. Annual reviews mean little because they are not tied to any financial gain. Very difficult to get a promotion because people tend to stay in jobs until they die.

    Advice to Management

The governor and the legislature really need to understand that if they want to run the state like private industry, they need to provide private industry salaries and/or raises.

I have been working at Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Some offices have very detailed analysis of volume growth and productivity, which allows for detailed analysis and performance measurements. For computer-savvy and self-driven individuals this job is pretty easy.

    Cons

Once you get hired, there really isn't much incentive to do a great job. Most higher paying jobs require you to network with important people. Various offices within the Department have poor communication. Doesn't pay well enough to have creative, well-educated employees. If you have a decent amount of motivation, creativity and intelligence, you won't want to stay.

    Advice to Management

Work on creating more incentives for your best employees to excel and stay with the company.

    Pros

    This job is somewhat flexible.

    Cons

Employees are very underpaid. Job duties continue to increase however there is minimal promotional potential, no bonuses and pay has not increased in over a decade. Very little opportunity for growth.

    Advice to Management

    Increase pay

    Pros

An 8 to 5 position, okay benefits, great health plan.

    Cons

Management is horrible, little to no training, too much favoritism and incompetence.

    Advice to Management

Focus on improving work and communication relationships rather than BFF relationships.

I have been working at Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits, some flexibility with work life balance but often meaningless restrictions on time that negatively impact personal life.

    Cons

Compensation. working conditions. management, lack of mobility, micromanagement. Supervisors spend much of their time checking the page long daily activity log sometimes broken into five minute increments. Total wast of time. Taxpayer dollars wasted.

    Advice to Management

Trust employees to do their job, stop justifying positions with micromanagement. Allow supervisors to spend more time coaching employees instead of checking boxes. Advocate for your staff, make them feel you are on their side.

I worked at Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

This agency believes in promoting from within as long as employees are hardworking and take initiative. The agency has various areas that it regulates and provide enforcement for, therefore there are multiple opportunities and areas in which to work and gain experience.

    Cons

Sometimes promotional opportunities are eliminated by restructuring or budget issues, and there is no mentor/mentee program established to assist people in seeking promotional opportunities.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be a mentor/mentee program established in order to assist employees in their attempts to promote up and avail themselves of promotional opportunities.
