I have been working at Florida Department of Health full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Get nutrition education/counseling experience.
Get a chance to apply to an accredited dietetic internship only available to nutrition educators who work for WIC. (Pasco County Dietetic Internship)
    Health insurance benefits are amazing.

    Cons

High turnover rate due to nutrition educators leaving to internships. Causes short staffing. Can be stressful to work with a high caseload but doable.

    Advice to Management

Hire more nutrition educators so that the sites do not go for long periods of time being short staffed.

I have been working at Florida Department of Health part-time

    Pros

Fun job for the most part. Decent pay for licensed dietitians

    Cons

Fast paced work load especially when short staffed. Extremely long and somewhat useless training period.

    Advice to Management

Be more diligent in hiring employees quickly when someone resigns. Since the training takes 2 months there is way too long a gap and other employees end up being over worked

I have been working at Florida Department of Health full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Some excellent, dedicated, hardworking, and creative co-workers. Stability if you can hang in there. Remain career service, don't get snookered into taking a supervisory role. On the days you feel you are making a difference for the good, it is wonderful. On the days when you spend more time CYA'ing, it's not good.

    Cons

Salary (no pay raises in 8 or 9 years; we tend to not dwell on those issues lest we get depressed). The perks provided in exchange for becoming a select exempt employee are not worth it and are eroding (being taken away in dribs and drabs). Most of the Tallahassee management are seeking to get their years in, retire, and sell themselves to the private sector; so they start paving the way before they leave with special favors to those in areas they regulate now.

    Advice to Management

Many of you are like the Emperor in his new clothes, surrounding yourselves with yes men, who will manipulate the data so you see what you told them you wanted to see. We have a good state surgeon general now, it will be interesting to see how long she remains, Some of you are really smart; I wish your ethics were on par.
