I have been working at Florida Department of Transportation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Training and upward mobility is highly encouraged. It is always a 40 hour work week. Generous vacation time and other benefits. A large portion of management is capable, dedicated and care about their subordinates. It is very easy to get picked up by a private company if you are an engineer.

    Cons

Work can be slow and/or repetitive.
Can have lazy coworkers that will never be fired.
Some management conceals issues rather than deal with them.

    Pros

Great working hours, holidays and benefits

    Cons

Florida pays their state employees wages that are near the bottom of all 50 states. Employees have not had a raise or cost of living adjustment in 5 years

    Advice to Management

Be open to innovation and change. Years of service or seniority should not be the only measure that is important during an interview. Education, work experience outside of FDOT and ability should be weighted equally

I have been working at Florida Department of Transportation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly people, convenient location near downtown, cafeteria on site, benefits are wonderful if you are supporting a family with low premiums. Merit raises are used but sparingly.

    Cons

The only way to make more money is to change positions. Your salary is determined by Legislature who has authorized one pay increase across the department over the past 6 years or so. It is interesting that the departments annual budget has increased enormously with such few raises. Reason being they are "dissolving" positions and paying contractors to do more work. They call this "efficiency"

    Advice to Management

It is important that you pressure our legislators to provide cost of living increases annually. It is becoming less affordable to have a job at FDOT despite the excellent benefits package.
