I worked at Florida Hospital full-time

    Pros

Vast majority of front line staff are hard working and very friendly, personable, and knowledgeable. FH does take good care of its employees through good health insurance, solid wages, yearly bonuses, and employee appreciation. Patient care areas are quite clean, kept in good repair, generally have supplies and equipment needed. Good options for tuition reimbursement, internal movement among the 8 campuses, and advancement if you want to move into middle management. Definitely on the front line of evidence-based nursing practice with a lot of good continuing education and opportunities to move into critical care, ED, L&D, etc.

    Cons

Heavily Christian atmosphere, which can be uncomfortable for some; IMO, it is not "shoved down your throat" and no one has ever made me feel unwelcome for my non-Christian faith, but it can be annoying at times and there are cliques among the Seventh Day Adventist staff. HCAHPS is a huge huge huge focus, interpreted here as "Patient Experience," which is great in moderation but they go overboard here at times and as an Assistant Nurse Manager, you literally babysit the frontline staff in terms of making sure they say everything according to a script, etc. Difficult also to advance beyond charge nurse/Assistant Nurse Manager, and rumor has it you can't get high-up in the company if you aren't Seventh Day Adventist. Among the nurses there are many who basically trained in FH for their clinicals, then worked at FH since graduation, who are utterly unaware that the FH way to do something is not the ONLY way. Hiring more experienced RNs who have a variety of hospitals under their belt would help break this superiority complex.

    Advice to Management

Trust your frontline staff--delegate to them, then trust them to follow through. Stop babysitting and spying on them secret-shopper style to observe their adherence to your script. Don't be REACTIVE when placing new policies or procedures regarding patient experience; find the BEST PRACTICE and be PROACTIVE by putting it in place and getting your staff to be AWESOME at it. Constant change creates HUGE burnout among staff who are in reality your bread-and-butter to continue providing excellent patient care. Hire a better mix of experienced versus new-grad nurses, don't just go with GNs because they are cheaper, as your patient care and safety will suffer as a result if you have a bunch of new nurses.
