I worked at Florida Power & Light as an intern

    Pros

    Awesome work life balance
    Great training programs
Take interest in the growth of their employees
    Incredible opportunities

    Cons

Trouble moving between divisions for internships
Can get lost in the bureaucracy

    Advice to Management

As an intern, coming back the next summer for another internship in a different division was hard to do. I had great recommendations, but ended up having a hard time getting in touch with my hr rep/didn't feel like my growth was important the way it had been when I was physically on the campus. Ended up taking an internship somewhere else.

I worked at Florida Power & Light as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Invests in their people and various internal training and excellence programs. Invests in new technology. Has great Head Office location!

    Cons

Can be bureaucratic as a large company with processes not always clear. However, I found things do eventually get done and they are always striving to improve with large Lead/Six sigma training program in house.

    Advice to Management

Keep investing in your people and new technology. Contribute to organizations that support fighting climate change.

I worked at Florida Power & Light as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company is very dedicated to being the best it can be. They pride themselves in taking care of their employees and accepting out-of-the-box ideas for improving their quality of service. The internship program that FPL (and their parent company NextEra Energy) has is well put together, with a fun introduction day; the FPL president even took some time to have a Q&A session with just the interns one morning. We also got to go on tours of some of the command centers and generating sites which was cool

    Cons

One of the things that was annoying was housing. It's not that hard to find somewhere in the well-populated areas near West Palm Beach, but they only have a limited number of suggestions for places to stay that previous interns have recommended to them. I had to resort to craigslist which thankfully worked out okay.
Being a power company and all, the first week or so for me was dedicated to having all sorts of safety training and training relating to sticking with government regulations. Which wasn't very exciting.

    Advice to Management

I would suggest having more suggestions of where interns could stay. I would also encourage the intern managers to think in advance about the work their intern could do so that the intern always has some productive work to do.

    Pros

The pay was great, there were plenty of Intern Events, and I gained valuable Experience in the utility industry.

    Cons

There were no downsides to working for FPL

    Pros

Pay and benefits are great! With the OT we end up working as a groundworker I do pretty well for myself. There's plenty of advancement opportunities as well!

    Cons

I can not think of any cons, pursay, I feel blessed to have gotten this job with such a great company!! Both my father and stepfather work for or have retired from the company as well.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps open up more apprenticeships in fields besides lineman. Not everyone is cut out for being a lineman and it'd be nice to have more options for an apprenticeship with the company.

    Pros

Benefits, salary and they care about work life balance. You are always going to have employees complaining about some things at work. As someone who has worked for many large companies in the last 5 years and looking in from the outside, Florida power and Light is one of the best companies to work for and the benefits are great. The company as a whole and their recognition to their employees is also great and not seen in other companies that much anymore.

They are many employee benefits beside health benefits, to many to go over. One big one I like is FPL will pay you to be healthy and learn to live a healthy life.

    Cons

Not really a con but in a storm or potential storm everyone has a job function and you may be required to work through that storm. The salaries are good and I believe they include this small inconvenience.

    Advice to Management

I can only speak for my department. My management staff is great and they make sure I am not overwhelmed and that we have a work life balance.
