Good place to gain experience, but company applies questionable business practices.

    Apr 24, 2010 -  in Everett, WA

    Pros

    - Stock price - company continues to perform well and if you own stock or have stock options, you'll do well financially. Compensation is robust if you are a middle or senior level manager. If you aren't, then this won't be a pro. - They apply lean tools and methodology pretty well and continually drive process improvement across all areas/functions of the company. - Company embraces change and few question or challenge the change. The company takes the approach of "let's try it and if it doesn't work, we'll go back to the way it was." Don't read into this that it is ok to make mistakes - it isn't. One is expected not to make mistakes.

    Cons

    - Career development is a problem here. Management expects one to deliver results, take on more responsibility, and promotions are few. If you interview there, ask the hiring manager how many people have been promoted - not a title change or reassignment to another area, but an actual promotion. Few people are promoted from within; most are external hires in developing management roles (MBAs). Read others comments on MBAs vs Engineers - their comments are correct. Engineers are not highly value in this company, which values business leaders over engineers. - Stock performance is impressive and the Danaher Business System is only partly responsbile for the company's success. Don't get me wrong here, DBS is a good toolkit, but most of the success of the stock price is due to their saavy in applying creative, questionable ways/methods to improve numbers. - Very short term focused company - not at all interested in long term opportunities with a longer wait for a return on their investment. - Little respect for their employees. They reduced everyone's salary by 5% in 2009 (10% if you worked at Tektronix) to make their numbers better at their employees' expense.

Racism, sexism, and hostile work environment

May 12, 2020 - International Shipping in Everett, WA

    Pros

Easy work but If someone does not like you for the way you look, race, and gender the supervisors will insult you within earshot, try to make you out to be unintelligent, walk around and spread rumors among your team to get them against you, mess with your bulks and computer

    Cons

A lot of racism - you will hear people mentioning the word 'Mexican' to anyone who isn't white or black. A lot of discrimination going on and people messing with your work so they can feel superior. Only white people are in management.

    Pros

Lots of room for advancement because the people above you who are good will leave for better workplaces.

    Cons

The company is trying to move in a new software based direction and not doing it well. They are losing good people through this transition because they think they can treat everyone like production workers.

    Senior Technician and Supervisor

Jul 7, 2014 - Senior Technician and Supervisor in Everett, WA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Highly qualified technical personnel and extremely hard working people

    Cons

Very little work/life balance. I was sucked into a supervisory position and promised I would be ahead of any technician within 2 years. That never happened and I supervised technicians that made far more than I did on overtime. e ended up taking pay cuts and furlough days towards the end and I left because I saw the writing on the wall. Danaher will burn people out as fast as they can and just replace once they're burnt out.

    Great products, potentially great organization

Jun 2, 2013 - Web Architect in Everett, WA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Pride factor in knowing the company makes great products for multiple industries. There are some very good people here who really care about the quality of their work. This is an established company that can endure economic lows.

    Cons

Impersonal tiered management, out of touch, often condescending. Contractors feel like second class citizens, unrecognized while carrying a bulk of the workload. Internal cronyism which tends to promote an individual to their level of incompetence. Poor HR oversight and poor manager training. Some managers have created hostile environments, public tirades toward subordinates without reason and without reprimand. Some very talented people have left recently, and more plan to follow.
