I worked at Fluor full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Used to be a great company - money is great

    Cons

As engineering monopolies go now, with no Americans getting work. The base groups are tight knit. Great in job knowledge but FAILED in supervision!! All the human resources **** IS JUST A FARSE. Sure lip service is a must, but these old crows can rule their roost anyway they want. LIE, CHEAT, and blame the lowest form of worker in the market - the contractor. Yes it's real. Anything to save their *** at deadline time and there is always an excuse to the client. Have seen it with several companies - allot.

    Advice to Management

If you read the cons above, I hope you don't go to church and proclaim to be a Christian, Things I have seen would only be explained and justified by money. So as long as management gets theirs, **** with the grunts. That actually produce the work that goes out for the construction to build the product you all get paid for. Get a clue! Keep the secretaries and cost and schedulers who are clueless to what is even produced (a position so fail that over the last 10 yrs haven't seen a company meet one or be in a budget.). but treat the base workers like ****! A failure from the top down!!!! SAD, PATHETIC and even witnessed just liars. When they hire you it's all kissy-kissy and at deadline time it's a nasty cutthroat frenzy caotic and wild - with no thanks

    Pros

Strong Reputation in the E&C industry and therefore draws strong candidates. This allows opportunities for key individuals and the organization to use resumes in the bidding process.

    Cons

Only working for the length of the contract. Many employees go on a leave of absence waiting for the next job to appear. At that point it is really "who you know".

    Advice to Management

Adhere to the values that the organization prides itself on. Many of these traits appear to be lost on the projects and certainly in the way in which the many subcontractor are treated.

I have been working at Fluor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

hours aren't awful if you draw the line at what you will do. benefits are decent with good 401(k) match. there are a lot of good people in middle management.

    Cons

truly inept senior management with absolutely no vision whatsoever.

EMT (executive management team) is a holdover from Fluor's days as a privately held company to reward friends and family, it is not an appropriate structure for a large public company. some in management seem to realize this but are afraid to rock the boat. mostly only old, white, republican men are invited "into the club", most have been with the company 30+ years, and many achieve this status as a sycophant with staying power and little real skill. EMT are the only employees with real incentive/long-term compensation such as stock grants/options and significant bonus compensation unless you started right out of college (or are recruited at a senior level), forget about real long-term market compensation.

there is no innovation in management: standard solution is to offshore to low cost locations in India and Philippines. period. investment in technology and new solutions is minimal.

there are very few women and people of color in senior positions. management's efforts to increase diversity and address demographic challenges facing the company are insincere and hollow. lack of long-term compensation for those at lower levels exacerbates the demographic challenges facing this company.

TOWP (time off with pay) sounds good upon first consideration but is actually less than many other companies. 1-4 years of seniority provides 25 days, but holidays + vacation + sick time come from that bank. considering the standard 10 holidays at most companies, that is 15 days of PTO (sick/vacation/personal time). this increases to 30 days at 5 years. no other increases occur until much later. it's mediocre at best.

    Advice to Management

encourage real change and growth; empower those who actually want to do this. Seaton is a nice guy but neither strategic nor a visionary. he is also incapable of effecting real, meaningful change.

    Pros

Cool boss here. Understanding environment. O can leave pretty much whenever I want. Time Off isn't a problem so thats cool.

    Cons

Downgrading Microsoft software, outdated programs, spending more time fighting with programs then working, contracted, bad business practices. So mind bumbing

    Advice to Management

Get better software and computers. Pay people for working to get a degree and having skills earned through hard work

Difficult work environment, relationship with customer is adversarial, office conditions leave much to be desired, union workforce has a poor relationship with management, no training or workforce development offered, high turnover among management.

    Advice to Management

Improve customer relations, improve employee relations, hire adequate staff to perform work functions, retain workforce, develop and train workforce, streamline work flow processes.

I worked at Fluor as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Located in California. The work environment is pleasant and clean. People are nice and friendly. I met the nicest people there.

    Cons

Traditionalist old company, absolute resistance to changes. Very difficult IT environment to work. I met some of the most obnoxious, rude, and ill-suited IT managers that I have ever worked with.

    Advice to Management

This company needs a new attitude make over.

    Pros

Travel and money if you produce (or kiss butt of non producing old dogs).

    Cons

Too much dead wood from CEO to all offices living off 35 years at company despite the fact they can't open PowerPoint.

    Advice to Management

Fire CEO and 80% of the old dogs. You've lost too Uchenna young talent due to your arrogance and entitlement views the past 3 years.

I have been working at Fluor full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Large company, strong emphasis on procedures and practices, if you are in the right network, it can be very lucrative.

    Cons

Extremely old school, run by people who grew up in 1950's and still think computers are the root cause of many inefficiencies.
One example is that they still block you from accessing gmail from work. Which is in fact counter productive. Coz almost everyone now has smart phones so people use their mobile devices to surf, which actually takes longer, so if the management was smarter then would actually modify the IT policies.
Also, there is no importance on real tech advancement, they tried developing an inhouse social network, to keep people engaged, but the systems are so antiquated that everything runs at a glacial pace.
Fluor was one of the biggest companies lobbying to Microsoft to keep XP alive, even after Microsoft stopped support.

    Advice to Management

Need to make relevant changes, just getting an inhouse social network doesnt make Fluor cool, you need to change at a much deeper level.
