    I worked at Fluor full-time

    Pros

In my years at Fluor, the company seemed to struggle with naming an HR professional to head the HR department. The M.O. was to place the most senior engineer with the best people skills in the role and then have that person learn the HR business. Finally, they name one of the sharpest and most trustworthy HR people on the planet to fill the SVP role. Great move, Fluor!

    Cons

Stop trying to create "One Fluor" when all of the reward systems are geared to individual project performance.

    Advice to Management

    Nicely done!

I have been working at Fluor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

decent pay and alternate Friday's off

    Cons

bloated management of buddies who take care of each other
every year or two the company changes structure of business lines for no real reason and it makes me wonder if they're hiding poor performance or other issues
    horrible insurance and other "benefits"

    Advice to Management

it's amazing how few leaders are technology aware. if they could, they'd still run the business with rotary phones and typewriters. the frat boy mentality of these overpaid loafers needs to end if this company wants to survive and be profitable.

I have been working at Fluor full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent community of employees. Plentiful programs and ability to connect to people. Strong autonomy to employees. Ease of changing position and moving to new tasks, locations, and roles.

    Cons

Larger company provides less opportunity to rise rank in the standard sense of professional development. But you can advance by changing position easily.

    Advice to Management

You must be intentionally close to your employees. With the separation between project management and engineers, it is easy to lose connection and know little about your employees skills and lives.

I worked at Fluor full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Excellent Management
Openly communicates status of work prospects and status of competitors
    Very knowledgeable staff
9-80 work week with paid overtime
Vacation time can be accumulated and cashed-out if layoff occurs, so that employees can build their own "severance" package with accumulation of "time-off-with-pay"
Good project control group and monthly project review by Sr.Mgmt ensure projects don't run off-track.
    Excellent training opportunities

    Cons

Leadership gives preferential assignments to people they like, not necessarily due to qualification or seniority.
In past several years, increased focus has been on grooming future "emerging leaders," staff that show Management potential. This can cause negative attitudes and have negative impact on morale of all those who are under the Leader.
True competitive advantage this company has is in its ability to manage very large & complex projects, so low margin straightforward projects will be lost to lower bidding companies.
As with all EPC companies, layoffs will follow as billable work drops off.

    Advice to Management

Elevate the recognition and/or reward your technical leaders, along with promoting the Leaders/Managers.
Maintain open communication of company backlog and potential periods of layoff
Make some effort to stay in touch with valued staff that are layed-off in downturns
