I worked at Focus for Ethnic Women full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The staff are absolutely dedicated to delivering the agency's programs. The services are invaluable to immigrant women and most of all are free!

    Cons

The Management team is not responsive to the needs of the staff. The Board also seem complicit to the low morale and the high turnover rate of staff.

Annual contracts - must re-apply for your job each year and be on a 3 month probation each time. No pay raises, health benefits or employee retirement fund.

    Advice to Management

Respect the diversity of values, opinions, and input provided by your staff.

  2. "Staff work hard and care very much for the clients and the work. Limitations imposed by funders."

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Focus for Ethnic Women part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Women and immigrant positive atmosphere. No negative male-dominated office culture. Small enough to know all staff and maintain friendly acquaintances. The staff are committed to supporting women, immigrants, and visible minorities succeed despite declining support from funders and community. Front-line work with clients is very fulfilling and meaningful. New office is a great space. Programming is effective and good for the community.

    Cons

No benefits. Wage freeze. Fixed one-year contracts and staff turnover. Disconnect between Board's direction and the work of Staff.

    Advice to Management

Do not forget the importance of staff and agency morale in the day to day work.
