I worked at Fog Creek Software full-time

    Pros

Leadership, autonomy, respect, amazing people, people first

    Cons

you must be amazing because you're surrounded by incredible talent

    Advice to Management

Need to start managing the remote employees, some aren't working full days like the people in home office

I worked at Fog Creek Software full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    +great benefits
    +smart coworkers
    +excellent situation for remote employees
    +good learning opportunities for developers

    Cons

The company has been the same size and has been declining in revenue for five years. There's no money or vision. Remote employees are treated insanely well, so most stay around even though they see the company is going nowhere fast. Lots of complacency.

The company's story is they created Stack Overflow and Trello, but really Joel did both those things. He's no longer involved at Fog Creek. Company leadership is fine dispelling that misinformation, which is unsettling

    Advice to Management

Figure out how to spend less money. Stop gossiping about the employees you don't like to other employees.

I worked at Fog Creek Software full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fog Creek is as great a place to work as you've heard. The company was founded on treating people well, and that DNA has been extended into the two spin-off companies, StackOverflow and Trello. The founders are supportive, transparent, and generous.

    Cons

Fog Creek is all about self-direction, and so if you're a little lost, or your manager is not deeply connected to the company direction and leadership, you can drift a bit.

    Advice to Management

Looking forward to seeing where you take HyperDev!

I worked at Fog Creek Software full-time

    Pros

If you need constant management, this isn't the place for you. Upper management trusts that employees know what to do and leave them to it which is fantastic. You work with smart people and there isn't much office politicking which was incredibly refreshing.

    Cons

The founders can be somewhat difficult to read but as long as you accept that it has nothing to do with you, it's fine.

    Pros

    Good benefits, excellent work/life balance

    Cons

Company has lost focus and founders are distracted by other companies they've founded

I worked at Fog Creek Software as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The perks and location are pretty great. It was a small, very intelligent team when i was there. They went out of their way to make the internship experience awesome. People worked comfortable, 40 hour weeks.

    Cons

People seemed pretty checked out. The work itself wasn't particularly interesting. The smartest people at Google or Facebook tend to be as smart or smarter.

    Advice to Management

I don't think there's anything management is doing particularly wrong. It's just the way that's going to work.
