You can work hard and have a solid career.

    Cons

I have been working at Food Lion full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work with some really nice coworkers, good temporary job while in college, easy to get hired. Beats fast food.
If you have a good work ethic and stick in there for years possible to promote to grocery, and then assistant manager.

    Cons

Bad pay, no retirement unless you end up a store manager, low hours, impossible to please upper level company management. Hit or miss as far as decent store managers go. Will often have not nearly enough help because they don't want to pay the hours, and then they expect you to get an impossible amount of stuff done by yourself. Very discouraging because you can come in and work your hind end off, skip paid breaks to get things done, and its never enough for them. The company does not care about employees, just saving money. Health insurance is completely unaffordable. Regional management is a nightmare, and the head has walked into a store and fired people who've been with the company 20 years for piddly little things. My department manager has been in the business for over 20 years, and has to work two jobs to afford a studio apartment, and has no retirement. You make it to store management your under even more heat from Regional. Regional wants the impossible, so regional comes down on the store managers, store managers come down on the department managers, who then come down on their employees. So if what they want is unreasonable, there's nothing even your store manager can do about it.

    Advice to Management

Be realistic in your expectations. I know you need to make money, but if you tried caring and taking care of your employees I think it would come back around to you. Prioritize. If you cut down hours next to nothing to save money, the employee cannot get everything done, so rather than freaking out about a missing decorative sticker, make sure they are doing the most important things for health safety, and customer satisfaction. Cause if you make them focus on the irrelevant stuff, the times going to come out of something else that may be a danger to peoples health.

I worked at Food Lion part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This is a good job for a high school student looking to make a little bit of money. Management is usually good about working with schedules.
It is fun to make connections with customers and build relationships.

    Cons

Very hard to move up. Management often plays favorites instead of choosing the best person for promotion.
Worked full-time hours but management refused to make me a full-time employee. I eventually left the company for a job that offered full-time flex schedule.

    Advice to Management

Learn to value your employees for what they bring to the company--not the ones that amuse you the most. Business thrives on the backs of the dedicated.
