    Pros

There are chances to get good hours. You'll mostly have good interactions with customers. Also, the busier the day is, the faster your shift gets over.

    Cons

Standing up for long hours, some times in the same spot if it gets busy. Holidays aren't so easy to get off, and in fact you are instructed to not request any off.

I worked at Food Lion full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Friendly environment, pretty laid back management and department heads. Plenty of hours as long as you're willing to work, and they're pretty good about working around your schedule. The company stays true to their low prices, great sales, satisfaction guaranteed, and return policies.

    Cons

Hourly associates don't make enough, unless they're in school or have no bills to pay. The annual pay raise is a standard 1% of what you're already making, which is a slap in the face to any employee no matter their age/living situation. Cashiers especially get dumped on with low pay, while a stocker or produce associate makes at least a dollar more starting. And advancement opportunities are just not there.

    Advice to Management

Pay your cashiers what they deserve. They're the front line of your customer service, and a lot of times that can be an ugly thing. If anything is priced wrong, something doesn't scan or the customer just wants to take their bad day out on someone - the cashier is the one taking the direct hit. Pay attention to your front-end staff - the office associates tend to be a group of friends and it can make your newer staff feel excluded. I was an office associate at my store and ended up quitting because some of the other office workers made the whole work place feel like a rerun of high school.

I worked at Food Lion part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good store management, work experience, most co-workers friendly, clientele are normally friendly and easy to assist.

    Cons

Poor hours, department managers spend hours standing around talking to other employees, very slow job advancement.

    Advice to Management

Hire more full time employees, it would save money spent in training and boost store performance. People don't like working several 40 hour weeks just to be cut down 6 hours/week for the next month.

I worked at Food Lion part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The work isn't terribly difficult and shifts usually aren't very long.

    Cons

Management doesn't care to ask you why you're not available certain days and times and decides when they want to override your availability at a whim. You are expected to find your own coverage too even though you told them you couldn't work at the selected time/day. Employee morale is usually low and the job can be very boring.

    Advice to Management

Before forcing people to work when they say they can't, ask them Why they can't work then rather than assuming it's just because they don't want to. Also try to encourage a more positive attitude - don't act like you hate your job or everyone else will too.
