I worked at Forio full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The developer team is open and even eager to use new technology. If you are interested in experimenting with new frameworks and javascript libraries, you'll get support and interest from others.

Forio has the structure and size of a startup, but without the instability. Projects are collaborative across teams. People like to work with each other.

    Cons

A relatively unstructured environment can be a double-edged sword depending on your personality. Nobody is going to give you a checklist on how to do your job well. This isn't a con if you're comfortable with ambiguity and want to take your role by the reigns, but if you're used to highly defined tasks you may feel a bit overwhelmed.

The small team size can mean that you have to work on several projects at once.

    Advice to Management

Give developers clear opportunities for growth and what the future looks like if you succeed in your role.

I have been working at Forio full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I like this company. They try to pick cool clients that are doing good things, and regardless of the client they build really cutting edge and beautiful sims. Co-workers are great - very real and laid-back. Managers and co-workers really respect each other's boundaries outside of work hours.

    Cons

Projects can be unorganized, and there can be constant back and forth with clients. Seems like company is trying to address this problem, but let's see.

I have been working at Forio full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company has been profitable for years through ups and downs in the market. It has established, dedicated clients who say great things about working with Forio. It is not a venture-backed, rah-rah, everybody drink the Kool Aid culture. It is a flat, merit-based environment with good work-life balance. It cares about applying the latest, forward-looking web technologies in the work. And there is a 'feel good' bonus to the educational aspect of the applications you create.

    Cons

Without the cover of venture money, it's not trying to hit a home run every day - focus is more on sustainability.

    Advice to Management

Keep working on the product and looking ahead.

I have been working at Forio full-time

    Pros

Lots of smart and interesting people
    Projects are interesting
    Fairly Unstructured
Autonomous but still have lots of chance to learn from each other
Projects are a mix of learning simulations and data visualizations with an analytics backend, your work quickly makes an impact

    Cons

Trade-offs between project goals and product development can create replication of effort
Missing opportunities for sharing code across projects

    Advice to Management

Continue to invest in core platform development to leverage project work and minimize replication of effort across projects

I have been working at Forio full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

An innovative company without the unstable startup vibes. Very smart employees and overall a laid-back atmosphere. I feel that I can make an impact here and get my ideas to the right person, quickly. Conservative, organic growth and job stability. Fun office in the Mission!

    Cons

Self-starters work best here - not a lot of hand-holding or formal training. Hit the ground running and be ready to teach yourself and absorb as much as you can through interactions with Sr. management.

    Neutral Outlook

    Pros

Working with the other developers. People helped each other and I've learned from the other engineers. Forio managed to hire smart, motivated people that are great to work with. Not much office politics and things were pretty transparent.

    Cons

On-boarding wasn't as smooth as it could be. Management did not backfill positions after there was employee turnover. I was paid pretty well, but the company's benefits package was weak.
